BEING STILL AND QUIET: Being Still and quiet is a hard thing to do. It takes patients and practice. But as always I am going to try to make it fun.
Quiet is one thing but Still is another. Ever notice how you never have to cough, sneeze or itch until your up in your stand? But there are ways around movement, and I am going to try to help all Young Bowhunters out. Deer, next to having a very strong sense of smell that can be up to 400 times stronger than a humans, depend on their eyes and ears in order to survive. Deer are very smart animals. They have tricks as do we. For instance deer sleep in thick, heavy cover. Not only to have shelter but so if someone or something approaches it will wake them up so they can get away in time.
The thing we all have to understand is that deer have lived in the woods all of their lives. They know their surroundings, and as I said before they are very smart. So being still and quiet is the key to a successful hunt. If deer can't hear, smell, or see you they don't know your there.
I always play a game to make being quiet more fun. when am walking to my stand I listen to see if I can hear whoever I am hunting with walking to their stand. I will admit I sometimes get excited and move to quickly. But most of the time I can hear them walking to their stand.
Walking to fast can cause problems also. Just take into consideration that your stand is always gonna be there. Especially if it is on your back. And the deer are there too.
Tip 1: Avoid logs and stumps. Stepping on these can make a loud CRACK! And that will scare your buck away for sure.
Tip 2: If you feel directly below your nose on the ditch looking thing above you lip there is a nerve there. If you have to sneeze press on this place and it will go away.
Tip 3: Carry a squirrel call with you. This way if you are up in your stand and your boot does that occasional scrape thing along the tree, you can give that squirrel call a couple of chirps and the deer will think you are just an annoying squirrel.
Tip 4: Trees do not hum. NEVER hum your favorite tune out loud that is sure to give you away!
I hope these tips work for you. Let me know how you did. And if you have a tip , question or just wanna say hello drop me a line at brian@bowhunting.net
Happy Hunting!!!!!
