It has been a long time since I have talked to you guys, so I figured you needed an update on my hunting. Well here it is,
When bowhunting came around I was both surprised and happy to see how quickly it had come. I had all my supplies and had practiced a lot with my bow. I had put my stand in a place where I had seen deer last year and while preseason scouting. The first morning I saw nothing by my stand, but after that I saw a deer almost every time I went out.
One afternoon I had not seen anything yet when I heard a strange sound behind me. I turned around and saw two small bucks sparring. They were hard to see because the woods were thick. They were about 50 yards behind me and never came out from the woods. The next day I saw a yearling. She was about 40 yards away. I was hoping her mom was nearby, and I soon saw her. It looked like the doe would walk right by my stand, on a trail nearby, but the yearling bleated and she ran to it. The little yearling could not cross the fence so she went on the other side away from me. That is just the way it goes sometimes.
The next weekend, I was sitting in my stand and had seen a few deer far off. I watched the woods behind me and saw a massive buck. He was circling around my stand and I was watching him. I lost sight of him in the woods and was looking for him, but could not find him. When it was dark and I could not see my sight, I heard noise to the left of me. I could not tell what is was because it was so dark, but it came out 10 yards from me and stood there still and broadside. It was too dark to shoot. The deer came right under my stand, and then I could see this was the big buck I had seen earlier. It was really frustrating not being able to shoot. It wandered back into the woods and I got down without spooking it.
My friend Dave Cruz and I decided to go out the last day of the season and give it one more try. As we were walking into the woods, we were both shocked to see a doe and a buck spook about 50 yards from where we had parked the car. We got a good look at the buck and we both stared at each other like we had seen an alien. We knew we had to try and get this big buck. Dave set up on a ridge opposite from me where we had seen this buck before, and I went to my stand.
The light was fading fast and it was hard to see, but I saw two deer about 50 yards from me. I could not tell what they were, then I saw them put their heads down and spar. They must have been small buck, because they had small bodies. I could hear their antlers touching each others, but they were just playing around and imitating two older dominant bucks. So my season ended with no luck. I caught up with Dave. He had about the same luck.
Then gun season came around. I was not as excited because I enjoy bowhunting a lot more. I had a pretty bad year and only saw a few deer, but my group did very well. Dave’s brother Tim and their father Hector both harvested big 9 points, and Dave shot a nice doe. Hector also shot two other deer. So it was quite a year for him. Overall for our group it was a very good season.
