The Perfect Shot
Johnny Kennedy
Is there that perfect shot, well as bow season approach's we need to think about this a minute. It is something we see in our minds visualizing the deer standing there at broadside and seeing our arrows hit the kill zone and feel the thrill of I made a great shot.
With 35 years of past experiences bow hunting and having friends come back to camp telling you they have shot a deer, and you feel great for them, then you go to where they last saw the deer to help them track it, because they told you they made a perfect shot right through the lungs, and then after hours of tracking you find the deer IF you are lucky, to find it was not the perfect shot. Some gut shot, some high in the back, some towards the rear; well we all have had these experiences. Most people see in there minds the perfect shot as they let the arrow fly but in reality it wasn't even close to where they thought they were aiming. Seems we tend to take our minds off of where we want to shoot because we want to see the arrow hit the animal, and this intern makes you shoot left or right instead of dead on. One of the main things we need to concentrate on this upcoming season is to PICK A SPOT. Visualize a spot on the deer and concentrate on that spot until the arrow has hit it.
We all practice before bow season starts but most of us just shoot at a round dot on a bag to make sure we can hit the dot at 20 yards. Well here is another idea for you to think on. Most areas have a local 3-D range with life size targets of deer. And other animals of course but it actually give us the chance to practice on a Life size animal. It's a good idea to do this, to learn just where that spot would be when looking at a deer instead of a square target bag. You can purchase these if you want from local archery shops and discount houses or catalogs. Some archery shops even have these animals for you to practice on at their shops so call around and see what is available for you to either purchase or practice on. It gives you a much better idea of where that PERFECT SHOT placement would be. It will also give you an idea of your ability at shooting and what shots you should take and what shots you shouldn't attempt.
