Bowgirl gets a coyote
My bowhunting venture began
as it had in the past several weeks. Riding the 4-wheeler through
the pasture and up the long hill, I wondered what I would see this late
afternoon. I parked and walked into the dense woods and located a
large tree to stand next to and wait. It was beautiful out there,
a very slight breeze and sun squinting through the trees as it was setting.
I leaned against the tree to relax. I closed my eyes and just hunted
with my ears; waiting for the familiar crunching leaves or twig snap.
Before long, to my left I heard something moving towards me. About
30 yards away was a coyote. I couldn't believe my eyes. He trotted
head down until I knew he was within my range. I came to full draw
and "hooted" at him. He immediately stopped and looked at me, but
with a tree broadside of his vitals. I held my draw as he trotted
a couple more yards and again I hooted. This time he was broadside
looking at me without any obstacles. I aimed and in a split second
the silence was broken when my freed arrow sent him rolling and crashing
down the hill. He went about 70 yards and came to a stop lying on
his side. My chest heaved as I could see him moving. Several
minutes later I nocked a second arrow and walked down to him. In
his last efforts he had successfully chewed my carbon arrow off where it
had entered his chest. The arrow was still resting in his mouth.
I was proud, surprised and thankful for my fortunate hunt that ended with
a coyote when I had intended to hunt deer.
