 2011 Wild Turkey Grand Slam Bowhunt Online Bowhunt with Robert Hoague, Fred Lutger and Collin Cottrell as they go for a Grand Slam in the Spring of 2011. Kent Daddy Comes On Down Fred and I had seen plenty of big gobbler action this morning. However, they had all just taken a break in the woods and we wondered if they would still hang around our area, or not. Even when we saw a few wild turkeys moving around back in the trees we didn’t know what they [...] Rio Kent Daddy Returns When Fred Lutger looked through the back side he said, “There’s a big Strutter behind us.” We didn’t know it yet but the next two hours were gonna be rocking. Action pics. A Bird? A Plane? No, It’s Super Gobbler When a gobbler decides to come he gets with it. But I’ve never seen one come in like this big Rio Grande super gobbler did today. To the hunt Texas: Afternoon Of Day 1 David Krauskopf drove us to the area John Hamlett wanted us to hunt. It was indeed an interesting place. We stopped on a hill overlooking a winding creek with water in it. Texas Hunt 1 On Video Online Bowhunt video of Fred Lutger on Hunt #1 in Texas at Big Johnson Outfitters in Texas. And here comes a big Rio Grande Longbeard gobbler. Kent Daddy Encounter We hunt a little longer and Fred Lutger calls up a Kent Daddy Rio Grande longbeard. And things get real interesting, real fast. We got it on video too. Texas: Hunt 1 – Wow! I picked Fred Lutger up at the DFW Airport and we drove to Big Johnson Outfitters in West Texas. Fred has the Osceola, Eastern and a Merriam’s. Now we’re in Rio Grande land. Last Day In Nebraska: Last Gobbler The heavy cloud cover broke up and the sky brightened. So did the view around us. Before long, without making a sound, a small group of wild turkeys came over the top of the hill and ambled down in our direction. Soon they were down on our level Then, without warning, a closed mouthed longbeard [...] Last Day In Nebraska Soon gobbles and yelps rang out from the roost area to the north. Hunting this hill is always an unknown. If the wild turkeys leave the roost and travel this way it can be great. Collin: Another Longbeard in Nebraska I got the video on him and Collin drew. The gobbler was 15 yards away but too many wild turkeys were around the gobbler and Collin had to hold up. A Nebraska Gobbler For Collin Collin and I returned to the hill for the morning hunt and moved the ground blind down on a flat near a gate that is currently open. It was plenty frosty out there in the turkey woods this morning. A Mishap On My Shot Daylight changed the snow from gray to white. It was freezing. We didn’t see anything for 2 hours. Things looked grim. But that was gonna change. Snow Day After coffee and breakfast the landowner drove us out to the blind. With the wind chill it was in the teens … but we were there … the turkeys were there … we might as well try to hook up. This morning was foggy and snowy. Just the kind where you’d think wild turkeys would [...] Florida Turkey Hunt on Video The 2nd video from the Wild Turkey Grand Slam is Now Live. We hunted in Florida for Osceola Wild Turkey’s with David Mills and Team SRR. Enjoy! Number 3 For Fred Every morning a flock of roosting wild turkeys fly out into the hay field Northeast of the ranch. From there they head in all direction. I watched most of the wild turkeys cross the pasture and head for the river bottom. I like this area. So when we broke for lunch and Fred came in with his 3rd gobbler he suggested we hunt at his new spot. I know a good idea when I hear one and after lunch the landowner drove us out to it. I carried my gobbler and hung it in the garage we were using as a mud room for the hunt. I got out a new Grip Reaper broadhead and replaced the used one on my arrow. It all started with a big Tom. Collin At Bat My bow set down quickly and easily, as well as upright and ready to shoot, because of the Bowstix support on the bow from WannaBOutdoors. It’s a real plus in a ground blind, where you ordinarily do not have a way to keep your bow ready for action. As Collin Cottrell got ready I turned on the [...] Tracks In The Snow We decided to hunt the hill. Snow and bone-chilling cold made Collin and I move to get out of the high winds. It’s my turn to shoot. And I do… At The Gate After lunch we decided to put a Double Bull on the hill top overlooking the picked corn fields. I’ve hunted here in past years and had some gobbler luck, plus this morning dozens of wild turkeys went there as they headed out to their day’s happenings. We set up the Primos Dark Horse ground blind [...] Nebraska: Hold Up Without warning a bunch of wild turkeys hush mouthed their way through the trees to our left and walked into view. Another 30 seconds later and they would have seen us folding the blind up to move it. Nebraska: Gobbler Hill We zoomed through Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas into Nebraska. Collin Cottrell and I stopped at the Lincoln, NE airport to pick up Fred Lutger. Then we drove another 6 hours to a friend’s ranch and unloaded our hunting gear. Back At The Farm When Dave Keiser told me I was returning to the Farm we set up on yesterday I was glad, because I really wanted to give it another shot. Tanner drove Collin and me to the area. We followed him to the bottom of the hill where we got busted and set up the blind and [...] Hunting In The Wind Tunnel Tanner Feyereisen picked us up at Double K Guides headquarters. We made the obligatory stop at Mr G’s for some of their hot from the oven sweet rolls. Thirty minutes later he set up and put Fred and myself in two separate blinds. We were on a hill 800 yards above the Missouri River. Boy was it [...] Afternoon Gobbler The second gobble was noticeably closer. Once we could see him, we knew the tom was interested. He strutted up and showed his impressive profile. And came closer. Fred Gets His Osceola Too Not knowing if the dark object in the trees 80 yards away was a turkey, I yelped and the spot fanned it’s tail. South Dakota: Gobble On Over The gobbler stopped at the edge of the trees and looked things over. Jef’f's yelps, cuts and clucks added incitement to the visual offerings. South Dakota: Arrival After loading up all our turkey hunting and personal stuff we said good-bye to out host and drove to Gregory, South Dakota. We rolled into Dave Keiser’s hunting headquarters mid afternoon on April 1. Dave greeted us and we took our gear into the lodge. It doesn’t matter where you are, the day you arrive [...] Hunt Update March 31 We’ve been without an internet connection in Nebraska. We will get you updated on on Nebraska adventure right away and keep you updated in SD. How Tough Is Tough Enough? I walked to where I had last seen the longbeard. Collin spoke out, “Robert, look at your arrow.” When I got over to him I saw my arrow. Yikes. Alabama Eastern Gobblers We heard distant gobbles to the north and west of us. I called on them to keep them gobbling and they worked their way closer and closer. Alabama: We Find ‘Em Collin and I met Troy Simpson near the place we hunted the first morning and made plans for the morning hunt. We went down the road by the finger of water and set up and Troy and his two sons went somewhere new. It was a very nice morning in the Alabama turkey woods but [...] Alabama: The Big Walk Sebastien and I alternated calling every couple hundred yards. We walked the first road to the end and took a left and walked that one to the next road. Alabama 2nd Turkey Hunt We met Troy Simpson and his sons and he took us to the hunting area where we had been this morning. Our map showed a woods road that ran parallel to the long finger of water I mentioned before. Collin and I followed the road to the end and then waited an hour and listened for gobbler or hen yelps. Alabama Gobbler Hunt I pointed the BowMobile toward Alabama when we left Florida last week. A Facebook friend, Shane Simpson, invited Collin and I to hunt gobblers at Fort Benning on the Alabama side. We met Shane’s brother Troy and his two sons, Dylan and Sebastian, and they took us to the base hunt headquarters to get the [...] Grand Slam Equipment: Bowstix It’s a brand new product that every blind bowhunting fanatic and 3D tournament archer is going to want once they see how it works. Collin: Gobbler #1 Waited about half an hour and quietly got out of the double bull blind to see if we could recover Collin’s Osceola Longbeard. Collin Meets A Gobbler He gobbled and I interrupted him with cuts. And shut up. He gobbled again, closer. “He’s coming,” I said. And turned on the video camera. Collin got ready. Comments & Equipment Setup Locating a place to hunt an Osceola is more difficult than the other three sub species, because they are only found on the Florida peninsula. Some of the more northern areas of Florida have highbreds instead of true Osceolas. Wicked Sister Gobbler Pics The hunt was done. Shane Hendershot and Wicked Sister did the job of bringing the gobbler over by me within bow range. This is the first gobbler of our road trip for the wild turkey Grand Slam in the Spring of 2011. Shane Hendershot brought the Osceola gobbler in with a Wicked Sister by Zink [...] Wicked Sister Does It We set up by a long, narrow open field in the woods. Collin and I got in a Double Bull blind. Shane Hendershot, C.J. White and David Mills made quick ground blinds to hide themselves. C.J. put out the newest Zink decoys, the Avian X LCD hen decoys. Shane yelped softly with a Zink diaphragm call [...] Opening Morning In Osceola Land We heard a few distant gobbles as daylight eased into our Florida oak and palmetto hammock. Shane Hendershot gave the turkeys time to fly down and start moving around before he called. Our first visitor was a hen. It walked by us and stopped and watched my taxidermy jake decoy and C.J.’s moving, feeding hen [...] We Are In Osceola Land Late in the afternoon Collin and I picked up Fred Lutger at the Tampa airport and we took off for hunting headquarters. It was late when we got to Arcadia, Florida and we called David Mills, he gave us directions to the hunting lodge at Williams Wildlife Preserve. Doug
Crabtree just fulfilled his dream hunt, the Wild Turkey Grand Slam with
a bow in 30 days. Follow the hunt from Florida to Texas to Oklahoma
to South Dakota and to Kansas for the Osceola, Rio Grande, Merriam's and
Eastern wild turkeys. Doug's pop Doug Sr. has also been on the hunt and
has all but the Eastern to his credit.
Two
hours before sunset I parked my truck in a clump of cedars and walked to
my vantage point on the hill, high above a 300 acre grain field, split
in half by the winding Leon River. I saw movement along the river. Turkeys,
4 of them, and they were going the right way. I hopped in my truck and
rushed over to Rick's Hot Turkey Stand at the bend in the river. A gobbler
and 3 hens were already in view. They crossed the corner of the field and
ducked under the fence at exactly the same place I saw the wild turkeys
yesterday. Here's a pic of the gobbler puffing up for the hens. Enjoy it
