Ohio

Doug Crabtree Sr.'s successful Grand Slam Eastern Wild Turkey hunt in Ohio on April 28 was actually a 3 day affair with the same birds. It is a case study in wild turkey behavior and a veteran wild turkey hunters savvy and calling skill. Here it is, just like it happened.

Special Youth Hunt
Doug Crabtree Takes the Matson Boys Hunting Wild Turkeys
The weekend preceding the Ohio wild turkey season is open for hunters under 16 who hunt in designated Public areas. Cody (10) and Christopher (12) Matson flipped a coin to see who would hunt first and Cody got the luck and won the toss. But Cody was going to be even luckier that day ...

Bowhunting Turkeys Lesson 1-6
Eden Taylor and Terry "Monk" Speakman had a day off at Doug Crabtree's Limb Walker Guide Service and went turkey hunting together. Terry and Eden both had 3 shots each at gobblers from 12 to 25 yards. Here are the lessons learned:
Lesson #1 (Eden): don't shot low. #2 (Terry): don't shoot high. #3: don't shoot left. #4: don't shoot right/  #5: pick a spot. #6: check your bow in case your sight pin got bent.
This is their first year bowhunting turkeys (they are great callers and deadly shotgun turkey hunters as well as crack whitetail bowhunters. But as we know that is not turkey hunting with a bow.) Afterward they both told Doug, "this was the greatest hunt we had ever been on."

{Apr 23) Back In Ohio
(Monday} Opening morning in Ohio was Monday, April 23. Doug Crabtree and Doug Sr. own Limb Walker Guide Service in Ohio and there was business to attend to.

Doug Sr. took Rob Keeland out and called in a 3 gobblers to 8 yards but saplings and twigs always seemed to get in the way and Rob couldn't get a shot.

(Apr 24) Ohio Season, 2nd Day
{Tuesday} Mike Sobonya (shotgun hunter) went with guide Eden Taylor and Eden called a gobbler off the roost and MIke got him.

Rob Keeland (bowhunter) went with guide Terry "Monk" Speakman. They got birds gobbling on the roost. When they flew down one came right in to the decoys. Rob harvested the gobbler with his bow. Later on Terry called in a big Tom for himself (bow) but missed him (high) at 18 yards.

Doug Sr. took Ken Snyder (bowhunter) from WV and called in birds all over them but Ken, a new turkey bowhunter,  was uncomfortable with the shot opportunities and didn't shoot.

(Apr 25) Ohio Season, 3rd Day
(Wednesday) Mike Sobonya had two tags and Eden Taylor and Mike worked a gobbler in to 8 steps and Mike took the 10" longbeard with his shotgun.

Again, Doug Sr. and Ken were covered in with wild turkeys and Ken held out.

(Apr 25) Ohio Season, 3rd Day
Thursday: Doug Sr.and Ken went back to the same place and set up in a different location in a field where there were no obstructions in the way. Doug Sr. soft yelped a gobbler in. He had his jake decoy in a mating position over a hen decoy and when the gobbler saw the decoys he became furious and boogied on in at about 20 MPH and attacked the decoys, spurring, pecking, and ripping the jake decoy into shreds.

Ken put an arrow in the birds vitals at 5 yards.

They quietly tagged the bird, broke the blind down, collected the decoys and slipped back to the car.

Why so careful? There was still gobbling in the area and Doug Sr. is returning Friday morning with the intention of completing his Grand Slam.

The idea for Doug's Quest began in 2000. Doug bowhunted in Florida for the Osceola bird and he and Greg Metz came to Texas to bowhunt with me for the Rio Grande wild turkey. We covered these two hunts on the net last year. We definitely called up some Tom's and made a dent in the local wild turkey population. Florida's bowhunt. The Texas bowhunt.

Last year Doug simply ran out of time. After all, he has a real job, and couldn't arrange to get enough time off to do the job.
