Cody Gets His First Deer

This is my son Cody, age 9, and his very first deer taken on 10-19-01. I got him this muzzle loader (cause he missed a nice 4 point with my old one which only has iron sights -- the day before this). 

I think it is important to break kids in slow and not scare them with big guns that hurt them. I loaded the gun up with 30 grains of powder and a 50 cal bullet and got it sighted in at 40 yards. He enjoyed shooting it and it did not kick the hell out of him. 

Cody hit the deer right in the shoulder and it dropped like a ton of bricks and never took another step. The doe dressed at 110lbs and we are both proud, I had to talk him out of a full body mount Ha Ha (grin).
