Here we are again getting
ready to head to Harts Lake
Lodge to pursue black bear. Danny
got a bear last year but I missed two. There is a bear up there
with my name on it, wish me luck. If you happen to miss our
bear hunt in 1999 then be sure to check it out. We will be leaving
for Gagetown, New Brunswick in the morning early and arriving at the lodge
Sunday. Danny and I both will be hunting bear and Danny hunting deer
in the mornings starting October 9th, 2000. I will be just relaxing,
reading and just enjoy being at the lodge until time to hunt bear. Danny
will use his PSE Durango again this year and I will be using a new bow
(PSE Stingray) I got this year and it is an awesome bow.
I will be calling Robert
Hoague each night giving give an update on what is happening on the
hunts. Robert will post the daily reports on this page. So be sure
to check back to see what is going on at Harts
Lake Lodge. My brother is going with us this year and he
will be fishing and not hunting.
I hope to have an all ladies
bear hunt one year. Check out this 442
lb bear harvested in Spring 2000. Six bear hunters is all they
will take at a time. If you are interested in going to Harts Lake
Lodge to hunt black bear then send
me an email and we will plan a trip. Since the weather was so
bad we will go in September opening bow season. Would you like to
go hunt black bear with us? Email me SusieQ
or Rick Hamilton
and it requires a $300 deposit paying the rest when you get there.
Remember this will be during bowhunting
season only.
The weather and the full
moon really played havoc on our bear hunt. With the wind blowing
so hard and the low temps it was just cold. With this ol' gal
use to the south I tell you it was frigid. Dale
told us that no one was getting bears at any of the camps this week.
Danny was lucky to get his and I was lucky to see one on Friday.
Tommy hunted all week and never saw a bear.
Sunday, Oct 8 2000
We arrived at Harts Lake Lodge
late Sunday evening. It was about 8pm and took our bags upstairs.
We met Rob (Rick's brother) since Rick had to go out to sea. Also
we met Fred
Hart and his cousin Tommy. They had supper ready and it was so
good. Fish chowder and beef stew. We had a nice evening talking
and getting ready to hunt on Monday.
Monday, Oct 2000
It seemed we brought the bad
weather with us just like last year. It was very cold and windy and
raining on Monday. The rain was coming in little showers and not
lasting long so Danny, Tommy and I went to our stands at 3pm. The
rain had stopped but the wind was still going pretty strong. I got
into my stand and it was rocking with the wind. About 6pm it started
to rain and I was freezing so I called Paul to come get me on the
cell phone they left me. Danny and Tommy stayed out until time to
come out. Danny was soaked and freezing. Tommy said his camo
kept him dry. I will have to find out what camo he had =) No one
saw any bears.
Tuesday, Oct 10 2000
Tuesday morning brought a little
sunshine. It was cloudy with the sun peaking out every once in a
while. The wind was still heavy and cold we went out to hunt
at usual time (3pm). I added more layers under my insulated camo.
We used the same stands we used on Monday. It was not raining at
least but the heavy rocking from the wind was still there. I had
not seen a bear or any movement so again at 6pm I was freezing I called
Paul to come in and get me but Rob answered and said Danny had just shot
a bear and Paul was going in to help Danny get him out. Rob came
to pick me up and then went to pick up Tommy. Tommy did not see anything
either so we went back to camp. It wasn't long till Danny and Paul
got back with his bear. Danny said about 6pm the bear started coming
in behind the bait and he had a perfect 20 yard shot and went for it making
a perfect shot. His bear ran 30 yards and when Danny heard the death
moan he knew he had him.

Wednesday, Oct 11 2000
Finally on Wednesday the wind
died down a little so we were not rocking in our stands quite so much.
Tommy and I hunted bear in different stands while Danny hunted whitetail
deer in a different location. Rob took Tommy in at the usual time
and Paul took me and I was in my stand at 5pm per my request. The
stand I was in today was sheltered in spruce pines so I did not feel my
stand rock except gently. I was surprised when the time to leave
came so fast. Paul picked me up and we went to pick up Tommy.
Rob and Danny met us at Tommy's location and then we went to the lodge.
No bear or deer sightings at all today.
Dale
came over to get Danny's bear hide when we got back from hunting.
He brought with him Danny's rug from his 1999 bear and Fred's
442 pound bear from his spring hunt. I can't wait to get the
pictures back so I can post them.
Thursday, Oct 12 2000
Thursday was pretty much like
Wednesday. The wind was unpredictable. It would slow down at
times and then blow with full force. We went to the stands at the
usual time and it was the same one I was in on Wednesday. Since it
was in the spruce pines it was not bad. I added a extra jacket today
to see if I could stay out longer. Tommy went to a new stand today
and Danny hunted the same stand for deer. I was able to hang out
to 6:30 pm and I called Paul to come and get me. I just could not
take the cold any longer. No bear or deer sightings at all today.
Friday, Oct 13 2000
Getting up and seeing a beautiful
day was a blessing for sure. It felt so good outside you did not
have to wear a coat if you could stand the coolness. We all were
excited about going hunting today. The weather was perfect and we
were looking for bears. Tommy went to his stand at the normal time.
I ask Paul to take me at 5pm. I was sitting in my stand and it was
just great to enjoy the weather with the animals moving around. I
saw squirrels, birds etc... I started hearing a clicking noise right behind
me so I had to be perfectly still. Click
here to hear the sound. The bear stopped chomping and I heard
a ruckus to the right of me. Shortly after the chomping started again.
About 6:45 the bear crossed over the trail behind the bait barrel not stopping
until he got into the edge of the woods on my left. I could see him
sitting there. It seemed like he did not move at all while he was
sitting. Finally he started toward the bait. I had my bow ready
to draw back and was watching him so closely. He had just stuck his
head in the trail and I was starting to draw my bow when... Paul drove
down the dirt road to pick me up and away the bear ran. It was 7:10
pm the legal time to stop hunting. Would I have been able to pick
out his vital area to shoot? Would my pins have enough light?
answers we will never know... I hope to have a chance at him again.
One thing I really noticed was how tan his snout was.
