Joe Mcglyn - Profile
of a Competitor
by Susan Lagazo
His name is Joseph E. McGlyn but everybody calls him Joe. He started shooting
the bow when he was eleven years old and has been shooting Olympic style
archery for more than 20 years. He has broken the 1300 mark in FITA
competition, is a 3 time collegiate All-American, USOC resident Athlete,
United States Archery Team member, Archery coach for the Empire State Games
since 1995 and NYSAA Hall of Fame member. I’ve known Joe for almost 5 years
and can best describe him as a nice man but not a pushover. He was born
to hit the bulls eye everyday of his life.

His envolvement with archery was briefly interrupted by an injury. This
incident prompted him to concentrate his time together with Niel
Kucich, Steve Miss and Guy Gerig managing a pro shop & Archery range.
Joe works as a manager of Corporate Voice System for Astoria Federal Savings
and Loan. Niel holds a position in Con Edison as a manager, Steve is the
Vice President of Astoria Federal Savings and Guy Gerig is a Forensic Detective
in Suffolk N.Y. Police Dept. Together with Joe these men run the archery
club located at 95-11 Ozone Park New York, of which I am a member. Joe
was recently named Field of Play manager for the 2003 FITA Outdoor World
Championship that was held in New York.
The Proline group volunteered to oversee the preparation of the Field
for this successful event!
The archery club has become a second home to my husband Armen and I
and I had already spent two years trying to master the compound bow
in preparation for our exploits in hunting. The course of our practice
had been altered because we were intrigued with the recurve bow while we
waited for the hunting season to begin. Joe always spoke of the recurve
bow with such genuine affection. A man of few words, his exacting advice
regarding archery has been acquired through the many years he’s lived it.
He is known to archers everywhere as “Bowdoc”. He can fix any problem
regarding an archer’s bow. He has developed his own way of shooting the
recurve bow without wandering too far from the basic rules. His form
has been choreographed to near perfection. His enthusiasm toward
this type of archery captivated our curiosity, so Armen and
I tried it! When I asked Joe, “Where do we start & what will
we focus on”? A short quick answer from Joe sums it all up “Start with
your form & everything else will follow. Focus on having fun
and this sport will color your world”!
Joe’s tournament history dates from 1996 to present. He has captured
all of the major titles in New York State and an array of medals from competition
from all over the country. One of his outstanding accomplishment is capturing
Gold (US Team) in VI World Indoor Championships, Italy 2001. Joe has set
his heart to compete in major world competitions but is an archer who is
just happy competing. To him it does not matter if he wins or not. When
you’re out there competing, there is no glory without pain, heartaches
& sacrifices. It is essential to be familiar with failure if one hopes
to compete. The struggle itself toward the uppermost heights of perfection
in archery however, is enough to fill a man’s lifetime!
