Youth Shooting Sports Event (Apr 27)
sponsored by the Texas of Parks & Wildlife Department

8:40am: At 8:30 a.m. the high school students arrived, good to go for the days activities, (or maybe just a day off at school?). Students from Hillsboro, Crunfiels Gap and Jonesboro, TX are here today.

Right now they are being welcomed by Jose Cano, the area manager at the Aquilla Wildlife Management area.

Shortly they will  hear a talk by Mike Krueger, Technical Guidance Biologist  about wildlife management. It's very cool and centers around a super slide show of wildlife and habitat in Texas.

It also  illustrates the life history of white-tailed deer and demonstrates wildlife biodiversity and explains where the revenue to manage the state's wildlife resources comes from.

Lastly, Hunter Education Instructor Charlie Wilson, who travels around the state with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Sporting Clays trailer, will make sure they all knew how to safely handle the equipment (22 rifle, shotgun, and bow & arrow) they are about to use.

The group will then be divided into 5 groups. Each of these groups go to an initial station; archery, sporting clays, .22 rifle silhouettes, 22 rifle swinging targets, or muzzleloader.

At each station they will receive an orientation for the proper  handling, safely procedures, aiming techniques and the fine points of shooting for each stations particular shooting event. Then then each kid will shoot numerous times and in 45 minutes, rotate to the next station.

Today at the two .22 rifle stations Frank Smith and Ron Karasek instructed students in proper rifle handling, firearms safety and shooting techniques.

The kids shot at silhouettes, which are metal targets depicting a variety of wild game animals at various yardages.

At station #1 they shot metal still silhouettes which fall down when they are shot.

At station #2 the silhouettes are on a metal bar and when hit they spin around the bar.

Additionally, the students shot paper targets of a prairie dog and jack rabbit, as well as traditional bulls eye targets.

Muzzleloading

Mike Bira of Midlothian, TX
supplied all equipment and the muzzloading guns for the 2nd year in a row.

If you are interested in putting on one of these in your area e-mail Misty Sumner of the Texas Parks
& Wildlife Dept. at Misty@deerhunting.net.
