Pulling arrows at the Archery station.

 Passing out arrows.

PAGE 2 - There are 5 stations at the event:  Archery, Sporting Clays, .22 Silhouettes, .22 still targets, & Muzzleloading.

ARCHERY:

At the Archery station I talk about archery and show the kids the tools of the day: the bows, arrows, armguards, and finger tabs. Don Beckwith demonstrates proper archery shooting techniques so they see it done correctly.

Then they shoot the bow and arrow, for most of them it is the very first time. We stress shooting safety, good shooting form, and aiming at the target.

Normally they scatter the arrows around pretty good on the first couple of rounds. Then it starts coming together and they quickly improve. By the time they leave, the majority of the arrows are in the target.

SPORTING CLAYS

Charlie Wilson expertly handles the orientation, instruction and coaching for the Sporting Clays station. Charlie emphasizes the importance of proper firearms handling and safety. Each student receives one on one, hands on training and gets to shoot the shooting clays.

Charlie is a Texas Hunter Education Insturctor and travels the state with his 5-Stand Sporting Clays Trailer, education and teaching people of all ages. He attends many events state wide.

 MUZZLELOADING

Mike Bira of Midlothian, TX heads the Muzzleloading station.

Mike is an Environmental Scientist for the EPA. He is a volunteer for this event and supplied all the equipment and the muzzloading guns, for the 2nd year in a row.

The students receive an orientation about muzzleloading which stresses proper firearms handling and safety. They learn how to measure the gun powder necessary to shoot and then they prepare the muzzleloader for shooting.

Then each student gets to fire a muzzleloader several times.

.22 RIFLE
At the .22 Rifle station the students receive safety instruction from Frank Smith and Ron Karasek for handling rifles and are instructed on proper holding, transporting, loading and shooting of the 22 rifle. Then they shoot  silhouette targets at two stations. Station #1 has  metal still silhouettes which fall down when they are shot. At station #2 the silhouettes are on a metal bar and when hit they spin around the bar.
