Hunter Safety Certification Course
Sanctioned By Texas Parks & Wildlife

Day 3, Modern Firearms, Hunting Techniques, Survival & First Aid, Testing, and Certificate Issues.

(July 14 - Third Day)

Game Warden
Roinnie Yates

Hunter Safety Instructor
Jerry Smith

The program was opened by Jerry Smith. Modern Firearms were his topic. Jerry reviewed firearms safety, and discussed the types of rifles, shotguns and handguns. The course attendees were shown examples of all types of firearms. Jerry closed by making the point that using air guns was a good beginning step for individuals to get into shooting.

Basic Hunting Techniques were next. Jim Gardner covered this subject. He familiarized everyone with stalking and stand hunting methods. He explained that in Texas some things are different than in many other states. For example, it is legal to put out feed for game animals and people can hunt from a vehicle on private land -- as long as the vehicle is stationary.

This event was also covered by Juliet Briskin, staff writer & reporter for Country World, the "Rural Newspaper of Texas".

That's Juliet in the top picture, taking a photo of Game Warden Ronnie Yates.

Next was how to recover game if it runs: look for blood, hair, bone fragments, and tracks and follow it. Once they find the deer they tag it first and then field dress it. Jim showed an excellent field dressing video.

Survival & First Aid was presented by Jerry Smith. He covered snake bites, what to do if they get lost, and gave them general first aid info. Jim introduced them to the GPS unit. In closing a video on survival was shown.

Game Warden Ronnie Yates was up next and he finished his discussion of game laws and went into the changes on bag limits and reported on the current status of the new hunting license that is under development.

Everyone broke for Lunch.

When the meeting reconvened Jim gave a review of the course. Then they gave the test. And the tests were all graded.

There were no failures. A few barely passed, some aced it and the majority scored well.

45 attendees were issued temporary certificates. (the remaining people were parents who were already certified or parents who didn't hunt.) The temporary certificate is theirs to use until the state mails them their actual certification.
