Part 3
Everyone broke for Lunch. Jim Gardner began the afternoon program with Basic Hunting Technique.
He covered planning and preparation for the hunt, to include reviewing
the current years new hunting regulations.
Vital Shots & Trailing was the next section. He used overhead slides to show the vital area on a whitetail deer. Then next slide showed 7 deer standing at different angles and the proper Shot Placement was marked on each. In conclusion he used a slide with 12 deer at different angles, Jim went one deer at a time and the attendees responded to each scenario, saying if they would or would not shoot -- and where to aim. Moving on, Jim discussed how to recover game if it runs: look for blood, hair, bone fragments, and tracks and follow it. Once they find the deer they tag it first and then field dress it. Jim showed an excellent field dressing video. Field Care Of Big Game was the next subject. The three main factors which can spoil game in the field are heat, moisture and contamination by dirt, debris or insects. Heat and moisture create bacteria. Jim showed a movie on field dressing and an excellent job was done. Survival was presented by Jerry Smith. The number one killer in the outdoors is hypothermia. The main thing is to use your head and common sense if you become lost or are injured in the wilderness. Wilderness First Aid was the last portion of the program. Jerry covered snake bites and gave them general first aid info. And Jim introduced them to the GPS unit. The group took a brief break. When the meeting reconvened Jim gave a review of the course. Then Timm
and I passed out the tests to everyone and the attendees took their Hunter
Education test.
40 plus attendees were issued temporary certificates. The temporary certificate is theirs to use until the state mails them their actual certification. Scenes From The Class:
