Issues.
(July 20 - Third Day) Primitive Sporting Arms was the first topic today. Jim Gardner discussed the history of Muzzleloading, the types of muzzleloaders, ammunition and steps in loading and shooting a muzzleloading rifle. He emphasized the importance of a through cleaning after every use and finished with a discussion of Muzzleloader Safety.
Everyone broke for Lunch.
Vital Shots & Trailing was the next section. He used overhead slides to show the vital area on a whitetail deer. Then next slide showed 7 deer standing at different angles and the proper Shot Placement was marked on each. In conclusion he used a slide with 12 deer at different angles, Jim went one deer at a time and the attendees responded to each scenario, saying if they would or would not shoot -- and where to aim. Moving on, Jim discussed how to recover game if it runs: look for blood, hair, bone fragments, and tracks and follow it. Once they find the deer they tag it first and then field dress it. Jim showed an excellent field dressing video. Field Care Of Big Game was the next subject. The three main factors which can spoil game in the field are heat, moisture and contamination by dirt, debris or insects. Heat and moisture create bacteria. Jim showed a movie on field dressing and an excellent job was done. Survival was presented by Jerry Smith. The number one killer in the outdoors is hypothermia. Jerry showed an excellent survival movie that explained what to do if lost. The main thing is to use your head and common sense.. Wilderness First Aid was the last portion of the program. Jerry covered snake bites and gave them general first aid info. Jim introduced them to the GPS unit. In closing a video on survival was shown. The group took a brief break.
There were no failures. A few barely passed, some aced it and the majority scored well. 45 attendees were issued temporary certificates. (the remaining people were parents who were already certified or parents who didn't hunt.) The temporary certificate is theirs to use until the state mails them their actual certification.
