Hunter Safety Certification Course
Sanctioned By Texas Parks & Wildlife

Day 2, Primitive Arms: Archery & Bowhunting, Muzzleloading

(July 18 - Second Day)

Hunter Responsibility was the opening topic today. Jim Gardner showed a movie named Hunter Ethics. It covered hunting responsibility and ethics. An interesting point Jim made was that, today, the public thinks camo clothers are a hunting uniform.

The movie showed some good, as well as bad, examples of hunters and hunting ethics. One of the bad examples was the conversation between two successful hunters in a restaurant. Their graphic descriptions of their kills leaves the other diners in the restaurant wide eyed, especially some elderly ladies sitting at the next table. It was a point well made.

Jim then introduced me to give the Bowhunting portion of the course. My discussion of the history of archery was brief, but the history of archery is not, because anthropologist say the oldest stone arrowhead dates back to 40,000 years BC.

Modern archery is a new kid on the block, in terms of equipment. I began this portion of the talk with, of course, the subject of "bows" and "arrows" and showed them the types of bows: longbow, recurve and compound and then demonstrated the differences in the bows. I added comments about the compound bow as a hunting bow. Next was the basics of how to shoot each type of bow. I handed a compound and recurve to the front row and they passed them around the room from person to person.

An overview of archery accessories came next. We were then ready for the the biggie, the important subject of "Bowhunting Safety". Most archers injuries come from broadheads. They must be screwed on tightly; if they are sharpened always stroke the blade away from the hands and body; keep them covered in a bowquiver, quiver or case; if the broadhead is not found use extra caution when field dressing the game animal.

Treestand Safety was next. I showed them a couple of treestands and stressed the constant use of "haul lines" to raise and lower the bow and to secure yourself with a safety belt the instant you are in the treestand.

That completed my portion of today's program.

Jim Gardner gave the group a break.

Game Warden Ronnie Yates was up next and he reviewed and discussed the Texas game laws.

Then Ronnie covered this upcoming season's changes on bag limits and the new tagging system for deer. Game wardens are law enforcement officers and have the same authority as state troupers.

Texas is one of the safest states in the nation in terms of hunting accidents. Ronnie discussed hunting accidents. Ronnie gave an informative talk.

NEXT: Day 3, Modern Firearms, Hunting Techniques, Survival & First Aid, Testing, and Certificate Issues.
