Bear Set Up

We all got up at daylight and
Chef Klaus whipped up home made biscuits and gravy with bacon.
Afterward Fred put together the two GameTamer treestands I received to
use on this hunt as well as during deer season. The one on the left is
the smaller and has a fold up and down seat. The larger one, that Fred
is putting the seat back on, has a swivel seat.
Next we loaded bait
buckets and tree ladders into both Fred’s pickup and the trailor on
Chef Klaus’s Excursion. Then we split into two groups and set out to
check baits and set up some stands. Robbie Cramer went with Fred and me.
Fred and Donald
Duck arrived several days before we got here and the Duck showed me the
list of baits and their activity. Out of 60 bait sites only 3 are not
getting hit every day. So things are excellent in terms of bear
Fred drove to an area he calls Big Rock. Robbie grabbed a bait bucket
and we followed the trail through the thick woods and came out at the
It appeared that the bait had not been hit. The logs were still in place.
Fred walked around to the back side and signaled for Robbie to bring the bait bucket.
The bear had pushed an opening in the logs eaten all the goodies. You can see the V-shaped opening in this picture.
Robbie dumped the
contents of the bucket into the hole and then we put the logs on top of
and around the bait. On the bear’s next visit he would have to work a
little harder to get to the bait.
From the big tracks
and bear scat I saw on a trail leading to the bait I decided this was
where I wanted to hunt. While Fred and Robbie went for the stands and a
tree ladder I set up a Leaf River game camera to monitor the bait.
Here it is strapped to a nearby tree with one of those handy Rope Ratchetts.
You can see the
camera in the bottom right half of the picture below. I set it for
Video Mode so when we get a visitor we should get a little video of our
big footed bear.
My buddies returned
with the stands and a tree ladder. Robbie had the GameTamer (which I’m
going to use) and a hang on stand for Fred to video from.
First off we put up the tree ladder.
Here Fred uses a
lineman’s belt as he climbs the steps and fastens the ratchet straps to
secure the sections of the tree ladder to the tree.
Then Fred pulled
up the two stands and set them on the tree so he could video over
my shoulder. Then I got in the stand and Fred cut some obstacles that
interfered with my getting a clear shot. Then he cut some big limbs for
me to pull up into the tree and tie around me for back and side cover.
