Colorful Bear Hunt – Day 3

By Randy R. Mabe

Jul 30, 2007 – 12:11:07 AM

08:00 AM Sue prepared us a big breakfast of eggs, home fried potatoes and sausage, toast and Juice. Man, I was going to have to go on a diet when I got home!

Dean and Cody Keating work together loading bear bait.

After breakfast I helped Cody and Dena load bait supplies onto the truck. Cody likes to put out bait on stand sights during late morning or mid day. This allows the sun to burn off any human scent before evening hunts. Cody only takes 6 to 8 bear hunters each year. This requires more than 10,000 pounds of bait material being placed at stands in one season! It really keeps the big ones coming in!

2:00 Back at the lodge for lunch. During the afternoon I spend time cleaning my cameras and shooting my bow. Cody has a shooting range set up on the mountainside behind his house.

Daily practice keeps Randy sharp.

6:00 PM We leave for another stand. We hunted a different bait sight each hunt and saw bears on every stand. There is definitely a large population of bears in this area.

At 8:45 a really large sow approaches and it is another beautiful blonde! I thought this would be a possible bear to take as it approached to within 8 yards broadside. Cody suggested to pass on it and try for a big boar since we still had a few days left to hunt. Man, it was beautiful so we filmed it for several minutes before it moved on. I couldn’t imagine seeing a more beautiful bear.

We returned to the lodge and had a light supper. I was still full from lunch!
