I've helped a lot of hunters get started on their first mule deer or elk hunt, and many have been successful. I am not a professional guide, but I do want to help others as much as possible. You're going to have to do some legwork on your own to get the most out of this column, but if you do and let me give you some help along the way, I know you can have an enjoyable hunt out West, too. The point of this column is to help you get started out on the right foot as you plan your first mule deer or elk hunting trip. When I lived in the Midwest, I didn't think it was possible to go on a successful "do-it-yourself" hunt out west. The unknowns are just too overwhelming: What state do you choose? When do you go? Where's the best area? Should you hire a guide and how do you know they're reliable? So this column is a good starting point if you want to plan a trip out West. And now is the time to get planning in earnest. My main focus will be the "do-it-yourself" hunter. I don't have anything against professional guides. Heck, some of my best friends are guides. But I know that some of you are on a tight budget. You may not be able to afford to hunt elk in the famed White Mountains of Arizona at $15,000 a pop. Maybe you can't afford even a less expensive hunt. But you want to give the West a hunt. So welcome to "Bowhunting The West!" Let's get started... Here is the List Of Columns. | List
