Venado Loco's Great West Texas Bowhunt (Wednesday)

(Morning Hunt) We drove to our morning stands in the dark and got there an hour before daylight.

The Duck hunted #23 for the first time. Kevin had seen lots of bucks at this stand site. But today Don only saw one Spike buck.

I hunted #24  Early on, I spotted a large bodied gray bodied buck coming down the hill toward a group of does that were about 15 yards from me. He was walking along and I could not get my binoculars focused (one handed) to check his rack but I could tell that he was at least a thick horned 8-point. When he walked up to the does he stood 10-inches taller than they did, I could have shot him over their backs. But I needed an extra point, so now that he was in one place I focused and searched for an extra point or a kicker. No luck. He stayed in the area but was not interested in the feed station, instead he approached the does that came up -- and there were lots of does and young bucks coming and going all morning.

(Scouting)
Don needed more cover on the #23 blind so we chopped sage and other brush and placed it on the blind.

Below is the feed station at #23. It is typical of the others. A corn feeder is in the middle, fenced in by Goat Wire. Each feeder was set to go off at 7:30am, 8:30am and 5:30pm. We did not hunt the fenced in feeding area, we hunted approach routes and trails in the area. Notice how high the blue feeder in the picture sticks in the air. There is plenty of low-to-the-ground cover, consisting of  cactus and a bunch of different bushes, all of which have thorns and stickers. But there are no huntable trees.

After we worked the #23 blind we returned to camp. At lunchtime another guest arrived, Cowboy (from the Buck chat). We all visited and the hour before we left for the afternoon hunt I took a nap.

(Afternoon hunt) Don hunted #18 and during the afternoon he saw 3 does, a 5-point with an irregular rack, and a large bodies 6-pointer with no brow tines.

At #15 I saw 19 deer, mostly young bucks and does. A young 8-point basket rack with respectable tines worked all the does in the area, walking up to them and smelling them, etc.. A little before sunset a light tan colored buck walked down the hill toward the does. In the binoculars he was a 10 point. The light faded before he was in one of my shooting lanes. When the Duck drove up the deer slipped into the brush and I got in the pickup and we returned to camp.

Cowboy had hunted #9 and saw 5 bucks and a couple of does. But there were no shot opportunities.

To Thursday ...
