About this bowhunt & about Venado Loco Venado Loco's Great West Texas Bowhunt (Thursday) (Morning Hunt) at #15: In the darkness I saw a shadow move. It walked closer and stopped, a couple of steps away. It stood still for quite a while and gradually I could see that it was a large buck. Eventually it turned to my left and, still very close, walked slowly by a group of Persimmon trees. Another figure was coming now, following the trail of the other. First light was coming on as the deer turned left by me and I could see a faint hint of the tan color of it's coat. Crackle! The buck jammed his antlers into the limbs of the Persimmons and worked the branches over good. (Get this, he was only 4 steps from me and was the largest buck I had seen here yet.) He pawed the rocky ground and urinated on his new scrape, it was very loud. Then he hunkered his legs and wiggled his groin and hind legs for a bit. The light was getting better every second and when he finally walked past the Persimmon's I could see good enough to shoot. He walked directly away from me with his head down -- it's main beams stuck out several inches past both sides of his body, but I could no way get a tine count with his head so low. Then he quartered away perfectly as he followed the trail to the other buck and I could tell he had long, heavy times, but not how many. From a tree I could have easily counted the bucks points but on the ground it was impossible. Other deer started appearing at various places in the brush. The first buck held his head up just right and I focused on it's headgear, an 8 and a darn good one too. The larger buck moved away further and finally I got a count, 5 tines to each side, but now he was too far for a shot. The rest of the morning I saw 10 does and 4 other bucks, a 6, a short tined but heavy 8, a young 8, and a Forky. I saw the 10-point several times but never close enough. Here's the buck's scrape
in the rough and rocky desert ground.
At #18: Don saw a Spike and a doe. Later he grunted and a Buck came up right behind him and snorted. At #9: Cowboy saw several deer and got a group of wild turkeys. He got a shot off at a turkey but missed it. Meanwhile, Venado Loco
took some pictures of some young bucks and a doe ...
(Afternoon hunt)
Here is Cowboy with his 10-point buck. At #23: Don was in the bucks, he saw 11 in all. He was watching 3 large 8's and when he glassed them he saw that one had a kicker point and he got into position to shoot. Right then, a larger 10 point came up and Don waited for a shot at it. When it didn't happen, because the 10 left, Don decided to go for 9-point and drew. A group of does caught the movement and snorted. All the deer spooked and left. I hunted #24 again but saw nothing. to Friday's Hunt ... Arrival
