Day
3 - Afternoon - Gettin' Er' Done
Since a Double Bull blind
was already in place by the creek I used it and was hunting before 3:00.
The two cross trails were still in view and in bow range, this was just
a different angle.
The first turkeys I saw
and took a picture of was at 3:37, two hens.
A little later a longbeard
with noticeably long spurs walked over the bank of the creek. I took its
picture, the time on the pic file was 4:17. By the time I got a second
pic and set the camera down, which was nothing but quick, the tom was already
past my shooting window.
Kee Kee, I did it with my
mouth, it sounded good this time.. He stopped ... turned ... and walked
into the window, looking for the source of the sound. I drew but he turned
back and then took a sharp turn toward the creek.
I found his legs and moved
above them and shot. Feathers flew and, wings flapping, he went over the
bank of the creek and disappeared. This time I did not wait. Only seconds
behind him I was at the creek's edge ... but it was too thick to see into
the creek and the bank was steeper than I wanted try walking down. Quickly
I covered 20 yards to the nearest trail down the bank.
No searching to do here.
The tom lay on the opposite edge, the wind was blowing and it puffed up
its tail fan. How cool is that.
I piled up some rocks for
a make shift tripod and laid my camera on them, set the time delay and
took my picture with this long spurred tom. (My arrow sure did knock a
piece out of his fan.) The time on the picture was 4:28. Eleven minutes
after I took his picture walking on the trail.
Then I took my gobbler and
gear to my truck and called Kenny McCrea on the cell phone. Right then
he was not available and I left a message that I had "given another turkey
a haircut and I wanted to go home".
While I waited for his reply
a gobbler sounded off and I called him out in the road 50 yards away. (This
is a super turkey hunting place.) When Kenny returned my call I told him
what really happened and he drove over to take a few pictures for their
web site. Here it is guys.

Both of us were very pleased
with how the hunt turned out and we drove back to camp to see how Roy Keefer's
hunt went. We figured we'd have to wait until dark but Roy and Shelby were
there already.
EQUIPMENT COMMENTS:
This gear did the job on the Rocky Creek hunt. Having
equipment of this quality gave me confidence that I could bag a Tom here
if I just hung in there.
-
Woodhaven
Diaphragm Call - Basically the gobblers were through responding
to calls but several times when I used the Doug Crabtree Sting Team call
it pulled the hens and gobblers over into shooting range.
-
CrossFire
Bow Sling - This sling has become a real asset to my turkey hunting.
We had several lengthy walks it makes it much easier if the bow is out
of the way. This sling easy to hook up and unhook too.
-
BowTech
Patriot VFT is smooth drawing, fast and hits hard. Set at 64 pounds
this bow shoots in the 270's and keeps doing the job on deer, wild hogs
and wild turkeys.
-
INNERLOC
EXP - The broadhead devistated the gobbler. It smashed the ball
where the drumb stick bone attaches to the body and cut through the vitals
to boot. In my opinion the Innerloc EXP is the one of the best broadheads
made for taking wild turkey. The wide, 3 blade cut brings them down fast.
-
Double
Bull T-5 Ground Blind - I had my Matrix 360 set up at home at the
Gate and took the T-5 to this hunt. It is in plain site and three yards
from the intersection of two trails and turkeys again paid no attention
to it. This blind is a big asset for bowhunting turkeys. The horizontal
mesh windows give you a view all around you and it is easy to copen or
close up the shooting window ections when you want to.
-
Venom
Peep Sight - It is a perminant fixture on my bows from not on.
This peep groups my broadheads tighter than anything else I have ever used.
And you need that with turkeys.
-
Silver
Bullet - Already a big favorite of mine this release aid from Pro
Release is smooth and consistent. The model I used has a concho style with
a wrist strap.
-
Fine-Line's
Hunter Bowquiver is the perfect match for ground blind bowhunting.
I use the nock bar to support the bottom of the bow and lean the bow against
the side of the blind, with an arrow nocked and I'm ready when a turkey
shows up.
-
Spot
Hog Hunter Hog-It Bowsight - I had to change bow sights when I
got back from Illinois, the plastic sight guard broke on the one I had
-- traveling is hard on bow accessories. The Hunter Hogg-It is all metal
and it is tough. The way the pins adjust up and down is unique, accurate
and solid, this is the easiest way to sight in of any sight that I've ever
used.
-
I used blue EZE
Eye Arrow Wraps with Tre Blue Camo Gateway
Feathers. to make a special set of arrows for this year's Grand
Slam hunt.
I fletched them myself on Easton
CarbonAeros in the Arizona EZ
Carbon Fletch with straight fletch arms. It was fun and I have
unique arrows just for this event.
