MORNING - The Last Stand
Gobbles sounded all along
the river and across the field as Fred and Doug waited in the blind for
daylight. When it was light enough that a turkey could be on the ground
Doug made soft hen yelps. Gobbles ... it sounded like thunder going down
the river.
Doug noticed a gobbler in
a tree 120 yards away and when a group of jakes flew down he made a fly
down cackle on his mouth call. Gobbles came from every direction. 400 yards
away a gobbler flew down and started their way.
Doug shut up. He figured
the gobbler was coming all the way, gobbling and strutting. He hung up
at 80 yards. Doug coaxed him for 5 minites. He gobbles and strutted, streached
his neck looking at the decoy.
And he left.
At 7:30am Fred and Doug broke
down the blind.
We are on the way to Nebraska.
We start hunting in the morning.
