Bowhunt For The Rio Grande
| Day 1 | Day 2 |
DAY
2
MORNING - First Rio Down
Fred
Lutger set up by the Gate. He saw a gobbler near our deer camp. When a
hen came to the dry-up pond Fred yelped. The hen came over. Two more
hens walked to the dry-up pond with a gobbler in tow.
Then Fred saw a gobbler and
hen by camp. When he called it came to 100 yards. Cows got between them
and the gobbler hung up.
Later he heard a gobble a
long way off. It gobbled a few times, getting closer. Suddenly he heard
a bow shoot. And a longbeard gobbler ran by. Followed by Doug Crabtree
!!!!

Afternoon - The Point
- Day 2
3:52pm
- Day 2 - Minutes ago I heard a distant gobble and yelped a response.
A second gobble sounded, close by. I cut excitedly, very brief and crisp.
The
sun lit up their silhouettes 80 yards away through the trees. They were
on the road that leads to the point ... and my blind. I grabbed my camera
and got pictures through the mesh of the Matrix blind as they came through
the old, run down fence.

I
swapped the camera for the bow and they made a half circle around my decoy,
keeping abut 25 yards away, a bit further than I want to shoot. The lead
gobbler was committed on walking on by. The second was hesitant and I yelped
softly to give him inspiration and courage. They both looked back the way
they came several times but when I checked I didn't see anything.
The
birds went on by.
I worked
on gobbles in the distance and pulled in 4 toms but 80 yards was as close
as they got. The area was very active. I also saw a group of wild hogs
50 yards in the woods.
The
Point was a consistent route for last year's gobblers. It looks promising
for this year too. I'm like Arnold, I'll be back.
Fred Lutger and Doug Crabtree
hunted together at various laces along the river. 5:15 was the first gobble.
It was 6 strutters and 4 hens but they had their own agenda going. Two
of the toms got in a heck of a fight.
For Dinner Doug made his
specialty, Butter Milk Fried Wild Turkey. It was great. There was nothing
left but the porcelain on the serving plate. Ummmm good!
