Bowhunt For The Rio Grande
| Day 1 | Day 2
|
We
rolled across the Texas line in mid afternoon, one day before the season's
opener.
Morning Hunt -
Opening Day
DAY 1 - 4:30am
- It's Time To Do It
Doug
Crabtree and Fred Lutger and start the Rio part of our Grand Slam Quest.
We heard several gobbles at sunset. This morning we will set up on the
dam where Fred and I saw 2 rope longbeards strutting Thursday. Wish us
luck. I'll update at noon.
7:30am - On The
Dam
East
and west of us, along the river, gobbles brought in our opening morning.
Doug Crabtree called and several answered. Soon it was daylight and we
saw 2 longbeards making their way toward us (to the north).
Doug
called and they came closer, It looked like it was going to happen.
Clucks, from real hens.
The gobblers blew us off for the real thing. We heard a few more gobbles
and at 7:30 we moved to the Point.
11:00am - At The
Point
At
8:00 Fred and I were ready in our Double Bull Matrix 360 and Doug Crabtree
was 80 yards away. Doug and Fred called.
Gobble!
Fred
used a Cherry Slate (from Woodhaven) to do light yelps. Two more gobbles
and we saw him 100 yards away. Doug called with his own diaphragm call
and the Gobbler moved up to 40 yards.

He
putted softly. And got buggery. Then he walked away.
But
he couldn't stay gone. Doug wooed him back. But he did a repeat of act
1.
We
waited until 11:00 and broke down the blinds and went to eat at the Red
Barn. We met Greg Weber and he and we all visited and talked hunting.
AFTERNOON HUNT:
Fred
hunted the Gate. Doug went to the Back 200. I went to the River. I set
up a Double Bull T2 blind. Minutes after I got in a big longbeard appeared
by the fence in front of me, (15 yards). There is a trail under the fence
and I expected him to use it and got my camera.
He
walked past the trail.

And kept on going. As time
passed I saw 3 hens, 2 hens, 1 hen and the above gobbler in the field.
Doug called in 1 gobbler
in the Back 200 but couldn't get a shot. Fred was covered by gobbles all
afternoon. The hens and toms were very active. He didn't get a shot.
We're looking forward to
Day
2.
