With
a rio grande yet to get I'm digging in...
MONDAY Apr 25
Morning
After daylight a hen was
walking fast across the field 400 yards away ... with a big longbeard following.
I called once just in case but he wasn't interested. Here he is in the
field and the best close up I could manage at this distance.

A hen came down the ranch
road from the hay bale area.
She turned and crossed in
front of me 50 yards away. I called and coaxed her over to me. She hung
out quite a while.
That was my turkey story
today, the Duck however got in the action.
Don Beckwith:
The Duck got to his blind on the west side of the little lake. He set out
3 decoys at the edge of the lake to try to get the turkeys closer to the
blind. Early on, a hen walked down from the dam and went between the decoys.
Gobbles sounded from the
Dam. Three big longbeards strutted into view on the dam, spinning, spitting
and drumming -- 35 yards from Don. When they finally came off the dam they
came out of strut and walked briskly through the edge of the water on the
far side of the decoys and hen. They went to a high spot 40 yards away
and strutted and gobbled again.
The hen went to them and
they all went to the north.
He moved his blind 10 yards
closer to the dam and brushed it in.
Apr 25 - Afternoon:
Several deer and a group
of wild hogs came by my new stand by the Point. All the gobbles were other
places but a hen
came through. At 8:00 I moved the blind down from the Gate, between a run
off pond and the fence, the narrowest place I could find, it's 56 yards
from the water to the fence. I'll be there tomorrow.

Don Beckwith: The
Duck set up a blind at the Dry Tank and stayed there until 5:00. Then he
drove to his Pool Dam stand. He sat a hen decoy 10 yards from the Double
Bull blind. In 30 minutes he heard a gobble from the river area and worked
him. The gobbler moved around the area gobbling for 40 minutes before leaving.
An hour later a hen came
to the little lake and drank water on the far side and left. The sun got
low and a big jake came to the little lake, drank, and flew across and
over the dam. Don called.
Gobbles!
Three big longbeards gobbled
and strutted their way toward the lake and drank water. A hen came out
of a ditch and flew across the lake. The gobblers flew across the lake
and cut off the hen and herded her on the dam. The three strutted on the
dam and dogged the hen.
Afterward, a big white headed
gobbler came out on the dam and strutted until the shadows got long.
