Bowhunt For The Merriam's
Day 1 | Day 2

Nebraska - Patience Pays Off (Imagine That)

First Day

I grabbed my T-5 Double Bull blind out of the bed of Fred's truck, but before setting it up I walked the wind break road. It was 60 yards long. A picked corn field was on the opposite end. Strut marks and turkey dusting marks were all over the road.  I liked the corn field end better so I put my blind there.

My thinking was that the turkeys would walk down the edge of the wind break on the corn field side when they left the area or to roost.

While I waited 8 deer came by. That's a couple of them above.

6:27 - The hen above appeared in the corn field. Three minutes later a jake was following her. I yelped softly with the Woodhaven Cherry Slate. It sounded sweet and the jake kept looking in my direction. But it stayed on the trail of the hen. I toned it down to try to lure the hen closer. It worked, but they were still out of bow range.

Look at this! A strutter. I switched to the aluminum Woodhaven and the strutter moved near the edge of the corn field. I worked on him, yelping continuously, breaking it up with sharp, excited cuts. He kept strutting ... just out of range.

I needed another 5 yards out of the bird. I switched calls again to the Doug Crabtree signature Woodhaven diaphragm. The strutter liked it -- alot -- and started dancing and girating. I covered him up with yelps and cuts.

It walked closer, in full strut. Close enough.

I was still calling when I drew.

I shut up and let him dance with my arrow.

It knocked him down but he got his feet and hobbled a few yards and disappeared behind a cedar. This bird was popped. I unzipped the blind to go after him. A deer was standing a few yards away and snorted, both of us surprised by the other.

When I peeped around the corner of the cedar tree the Merriam's gobbler was there.

EQUIPMENT COMMENTS:
This gear did the job for me today.

  • Woodhaven Diaphragm - Doug Crabtree Signature Series - This call pulled the deal off today. The gobbler was hung up out of range but went nuts when I opened up on him with this call he came on down. It was thrilling to see his excitement and see his reaction.
  • INNERLOC EXP - Once again this tough, accurate, expandable broadhead did the job. I stepped it off and my shot was 23 yards and the bird went only 21 yards. Well done Innerloc.
  • Double Bull T 2 Ground Blind - I set it near the edge of the cedars overlooking the picked corn field. This covered me if the birds came down the road, out of the nearby cedars, and a couple of rows out in the corn field.  As always, turkeys never noticed the blind.
  • BowTech Patriot VFT is one of BowTech's top bows. Truthfully, I've never liked hunting with a super fast bow because they were too sensitive when I shot them in compromising positions. I practice standing, sitting, and on my knees -- so I can tell quickly if a bow will work (for me) in hunting situations. This bow passed that test ... and is doing a great job on this turkey hunt too. It's a keeper.
  • Fine-Line's Hunter Bowquiver -  I use the quiver's nock bar to support the bottom of the bow and lean the bow against the side of the blind, with an arrow nocked and ready. This quiver is perfect for blind hunting.
  • Venom Peep Sight - The see-through blue color, the perfect shape of the peep's hole, and the way it aligns right every time makes sighting effortless.
  • I used blue EZE Eye Arrow Wraps with Tre Blue Camo Gateway Feathers. to make a special set of arrows for this year's Grand Slam hunt. I fletched them myself on Easton CarbonAeros in the Arizona EZ Carbon Fletch with straight fletch arms. It was fun and I have unique arrows just for this event.
