Day
5, March 25 - Swamp Cabbage
Fred
and I hunted yet a different farm. We split up and made set ups on the
edge of a hammock of large trees. We hunted for hours but it was a no turkey
morning.
For
lunch we went to Pioneer restaurant in Zolfo Springs. I got the lunch special
and a side of Swamp Cabbage. The meat loaf was great. The swamp cabbage
sucked.
This
afternoon we tried another place, this was a wooded area. I saw 8 deer.
Fred saw some wild hogs. But we were turkeyless.
Tomorrow
David Mills has another area
for us to hunt, the orange grove where we saw the gobblers two days ago.
Turkeys work the groves all day and David thinks our prospects are good
there.
I feel
good about it, David is working hard to get us on properties with turkeys
and we are hunting hard, as long as we keep at it we will get our break.
I believe it.
David
Mills explained that the problems we are were having seeing turkeys
are not normal for this area. However, this year is unique ... as in hurricanes.
Three to be exact.
Three
hurricanes bombarded the area with winds reported as high as 150 mph. Trees
were splintered or snapped in two. Limbs were yanked off the trees and
strewn all over. Forest giants were uprooted. And tons of water plus a
5 1/2 inch rain fall two days before we arrived has the low lands and swamps
flooded. Many of David's consistant hot spots are temporarily unaccessable.
These
low lands and wooded hammocks have ancient trees, the traditional wild
turkey roost areas that are unaccessable for the moment. I took a few pictures
so you can see the impact of these devastating storms.
