Third Day
Bob McNeff - Today
Bob McNeff, our host at Wells Creek Outfitters, hunted and heard 5 toms
gobbling in the same area and walked uphill and set his decoys in a small
open area and hid behind a "green, leafy bush." The toms stayed in the
tree gobbling until 6:50. While he waited Bob called rattled the leaves.
Hens flew down and came near the decoys. When the hens went down the hill
the gobblers followed them.
Ten minutes later 2 more
toms gobbled. Bob called sporadically and the birds circled him, 45 minutes
they came up the hill, saw the decoys and walked within 12 yards of Bob.
He shot one.
The other bird stayed in
the area and when he left Bob went to the truck with his Tom. He
told me, "I'll never get over how pretty they are when the come up in the
sunlight."
Fred Lutger - More
gobbling on the roost. Fred called two separate gobblers in but they wouldn't
get in range. Hens were walking and talking in the area. One hen crossed
the field. Gobbling continued until noon.
Robert Hoague - One
gobbler blasted the woods as daylight came. I did a few tree yelps and
when I heard him fly down I made a fly down call. He gobbled like crazy
and I got ready. Nothing happened until noon and I called 3 gobblers into
the area but I never saw them.
Doug Crabtree - Before
daybreak Doug heard several gobbles to the south so off he went. In 25
minutes he was on the same ridge 150 yards from the toms. He set up in
a small wooded lot on the edge of a field. A gobbler flew down and came
to 35 yards and began spitting, drumming, gobbling and looking at the decoys.
Twenty minutes later he moved behind the blind and was 20 yards, but behind
some brush and gobbled for 30 minutes. Finally a hen came to him and over
the hill they went.
Later, Doug saw strutting
gobbler and a hen in a plowed field. He dropped into a ravine on the edge
of the field and moved 200 yards closer.
