Day
2 - Today Doug wanted to Run & Gun (with the bow) and took the
truck. He parked and walked to the ridge overlooking the river. He heard
gobbles from the field as birds flew down. He followed the gobbles to the
Back 200 and called from the West corner. No response.
He went to the Windmill and
called. No response.
He drove to the Gate area
and got a gobble response from the direction of the Point.
Doug set up his Matrix 360
blind north of the Gate, along a fence. He called with fast hen yelps,
using his signature Doug Crabtree diaphragm (Woodhaven) And waited.
Half an hour later he heard
a gobble, much closer. Doug hen yelped.
The tom made a 360 around
Doug and stepped into view near the gate. Doug made soft yelps and the
longbeard puffed up into a strut and moved toward Doug.
As he came Doug adjusted
the Matrix blind to make a shooting window. When the gobbler was in range
Doug shot him.
The gobbler took off running
and Doug jumped out of the blind and followed. Both of them ran by Fred's
blind and in short order the gobbler gave out.
Here is Doug Crabtree
with his Rio Grande longbeard. That's two of the four needed for a Grand
Slam.
