"Just
Looking for The Right 5 Minutes"
Doug Crabtree's favorite
quote is, "We're just looking for the right 5 minutes." And this morning
he got his right 5 minutes ... doubled.
Doug Crabtree took
Fred Lutger to the blind he left set up yesterday. At daybreak, hens were
yelping and gobbling all up and down the river. Several turkeys flew down
into a small cow pasture with scattered cottonwood trees and cedars on
the west side. Every call Doug made was answered by gobbles but they stayed
with the hens in the cow pasture.
At 9:00 they were finally
able to move to the cow pasture without being seen. As they walked up the
west fence they noticed a gate. Its bottom barbed wire was high enough
for turkeys to get under. So they set the Double Bull Matrix up 6 yards
from the gate, facing north toward the turkeys.
Shortly they heard the rancher
on a four wheeler coming into the pasture to check on a cow that was having
a calf. The toms gobbled at the 4 wheeler. Doug made one yelp with
his signature series Woodhaven diaphragm.
Gobbles!
Two longbeard merriam's came
running down the fence and stopped 15 yards away -- behind a cedar -- and
looked around for the hen that had made the yelp.
Doug clucked and yelped.
They gobbled and one strutted into the clear. Doug was already at full
draw and made a call to get him to stop in the opening. He stopped.
Doug aimed and released.
The hit tom ran 30 yards and laid down by a cottonwood tree.
Two more gobblers sounded
off and two "Kent Daddy" Easterns came along the fence just like the others.
They stopped 40 yards away and looked like they were going under the fence.
Doug cut and yelped. The toms gobbled and came closer.
Doug called as they came.
When the "Kent Daddies" entered the same opening where the Merriam's had
stopped, they stopped.
Doug was ready and shot the
biggest one. It ran and a big cow chased it -- and it fled towards the
nearby fence. When it ducked under the wire the Eastern went down.
In five minutes time
Doug called in and bagged both a Merriam's and Eastern wild turkey. This
completes his Grand Slam for 2005.
The big Eastern "Kent Daddy"
tom had a Double Beard. This is Doug Crabtree's 3rd consecutive Grand Slam
covered online on Bowhunting.net.
EQUIPMENT COMMENTS:
Doug Crabtree's comments on the equipment
that helped him bag these gobblers and complete his Grand Slam for
2005.
Woodhaven
Signature Series Diaphragm Calls - "I used both mine (Doug Crabtree)
and the Billy Yargas Signature Series calls. The birds responded to both
calls but I thought Billy's call sounded more like the hens in this area."
INNERLOC EXP
- "This broadhead is destructive. Bone crushing penetration. To sum it
up Innerloc EXP equals, shake and bake time."
Double
Bull Matrix Ground Blind - "I've practiced setting up this blind
and it takes me 6 to 8 seconds. If it had taken longer we would have been
seen. And after setting the blind up in the open turkeys pay no attention
to it when they come to your calling."
BowTech
Pro 40 - "The smoothness of this bow allows me to draw slowly and
quietly when turkeys are right on top of me. I shoot 70 pounds for wild
turkey."
Fine-Line's
Zero Peep - "There is no guessing whether your peep sight is aligned.
It's one less thing I have to worry about."
