Deer Hunt - A Bowhunt In Progress
The
2004 Bow Season - Late October
Oct 29: Hanging In
I spent most of the entire
afternoon in the Double Bull and saw a bunch of does and a new 8-point.
I dumbed up and left the compact flash card for my camera at home so I
couldn't get pictures. But it was a cool day in the deer woods.
Oct 28: During mid
day I moved the Double Bull where I was closer to the deer activity I saw
yesterday. I also put a TrailTimer game camera here to watch the area.
Here is the Double Bull
blind set up just inside the edge of a group of cedar trees. It is brushed
in at the top. It is by a narrow opening with intersecting trails.

Looking through one of
the blind's shooting windows you see the TrailTimer EZ Cam.
In 3 hours I came back and
got situated. Fifteen minutes later a six point walked into the opening.
It stopped and looked into the woods across from me. Instead of taking
its picture I looked to see what it was looking for. Then the sixer turned
back around, and watched the woods behind it. Sunlight glinted on a buck's
antlers and it took shape in the brush.
I was ready with the camera
when and when it's head come out of the brush I got a pic through the blind's
side window.

The buck stepped into the
clear. As I took the picture the six point stepped right between us.
The sixer went into the
brush. And the larger buck followed.
That episode was over as
abruptly as it began. An hour later a doe trotted into the clearing and
hooked a right. Seconds later a spike, nose down, trailing, following the
doe.
One afternoon, three bucks.
I'm on to something here. None of these deer were going to the Hammer Hole
area. It's the kind of afternoon that makes me hungry for some home grilled
barbecue.
Oct 27: Moving Time
I want to move further into
the woods from the Hammer Hole hoping to intercept deer traffic that I
am not seeing. The Double Bull blind is perfect for this cedar infested
area so I set one up when I went in for the afternoon hunt. I saw a few
deer but they were on trails that were not close to me. Tomorrow I will
move it again.
Oct
26: December Tree - A Core Rut Area
I check the core rut area
I call December Tree. There were problems and here is how I fixed em',
complete with pictures. Then I went hunting in my new set up and got into
the action. To Hunt...
Oct
24:
For my first morning hunt since the Bowhunting.net
Deerhunt I went to the Hammer Hole. This is a thick area and there
are no trees large enough for a treestand, but this is a good spot, so
I have three tripod stands set up here.
Nothing happened until a
few minutes after 9:00am. A couple of very faint noises tipped me off and
I was on alert as a long bodied buck appeared to my left and walked in
out front of me.
It had a large body and I
took it's picture down through the leaves and limbs (left). When the buck
stopped and I zoomed in a little tighter.
(Right) He's light on the
antlers but check out that big butt!

Twenty minutes later a young
sixer came from my left and I took it's picture in almost the same place
as the earlier buck. Notice the difference in their color, length and bulk.
Driving back to camp I saw
two flocks of wild turkeys.
