Dec
10 - Morning - Big Boy 9 Comes Back

Going to the blind in dark
a deer snorted at me and ran. I'm lucky it hasn't happened more. My camera
has a Night Shot mode and I gave it a try at the 2 does and buck before
daylight. The pics were a million time better than my older camera.
When the sun did come up
it was awesome, fire in the sky, absolutely all good. In the first half
hour the deer were gone. Pictures: Night
Shot of deer & Sunrise.
At 9:55 I hadn't seen
any more and figured I'd quit at ten and eat a hearty home cooked breakfast
at the Duck's camp trailer. At 9:58 my plans got trashed. I had my laptop
with me and had been typing and when I looked up a doe was munching food
plot stuff 10 yards from me.
Before I raised my camera
up I checked for other deer. 100 yards away ... on the hill by the road
... stood
the big 9 point.

The doe got anxious about
something I couldn't see and walked along my rusty fence and checked it
out. The 9 strolled down the hill a bit.
He stopped and the doe came
closer to him.
The buck regularly looked
at the food plot and I felt like he wanted another snack of of PlotSpike
goodies. The doe walked over to him and they moved along slowly at the
edge of the trees, watching everything in the area.
The time on the last photo
I took was 10:15 as they walked out of my view. Chances are good that this
late they will bed down in the thick stuff in the middle of my place or
in the Rolled Wire area.
At noon I got to work. I
ran some long outdoor extension cords out to my photo blind and linked
enough telephone cord to reach. I already had a little place to put my
laptop on.
Next I printed out a picture
of the buck and, wrote "I'm hunting all day" on it and left it on the Duck's
table so he wouldn't come to check on me.
On the way back home I put
out a TrailTimer on a fence crossing that deer use when they show up on
the hill. I want to find another place where I can hunt the 9. And I hung
a NorthStarr Steel Star
treestand in the tree you see below. Then I ate a fried baloney sandwich
and was back in the blind before 2:00.
No deer were to be seen the
rest of the day. But I am sure catching up on my hunt logs, web work and
email and I'm in the deer woods if Big Boy 9 returns when I'd ordinarily
be home working.
Food
Plot
With the coming of the killing
frost much of the lush vegetation and huge crop of acorns on the ground
have died or gone bad. My green food plot really stands out now in Early
December. I worked with Mike Massey of PlotSpike
Seed to be sure I planted what would grow well in our area. Mike
suggested PlotSpike Forage Oats and Premium Mix. We planted the oars first
and then made 3 small sections of the Premium Mix. The Premium Mix started
growing in 3 days. The oats, however, didn't come up until we had a real
gully washer rain. Then it leaped out of the ground.
Wild Turkeys covered the
plot from the get go. Deer came intermittently. Until now. The joint is
jumping. Here is the page for the Food Plot plans, planting and progress.
