Golden Key-Futura® 'INFINITI'
Arrow Rest
by Dave Conrad
Getting
the optimal performance from today's advanced bows can be aided immensely
with a great Arrow Rest. Golden Key-Futura, the leader in the market,
has several Rests that fall into this category. However the hot one
for 2000 is the new 'INFINITI'. It is advertised to be the finest,
most sophisticated Rest designed for today's high performance bows.
The 'INFINITI' comes complete with a built in Tuning Gauge that is
easy to understand and operate. That is not all this tremendous Rest
has to offer but that's enough right there to buy it. The 'INFINITI'
is available in three models. Each model is based on shooter preference
(Hunter, Target and Carbon) and is differentiated by the Launcher assemblies.
I had the pleasure of evaluating the Hunter model. It came equipped
with the industry standard TM Hunter style launchers attached. Also
available for easy installation were both the No Noise and Quiet Tip Launchers.
Both were similar to the TM style but offered an increased angle in the
launcher arms. All three sets, in my opinion, should accommodate
any shooter's style from small carbons to large aluminum arrows. Extra
sets of Teflon tubes to cover the launchers were also included. The
durability of the tubes is better than standard shrink tubing and I see
no trouble in them lasting an entire season.
Upon opening the packaging the first feature I noticed was a most comprehensive
set of instructions. Most Rests intended for the advanced shooter takes
a lot for granted and skimp on details. Not so with the 'INFINITI'
instructions. Every feature is outlined with easy to follow steps, clear
photographs and/or illustrations.
Installation is fairly easy when mounting the 'INFINITI'. What
I particularly like is the fact that it has two mounting holes. One
attaches securely into the bow riser with a mounting bolt while the second
provides additional security with an anti-pivot set screw. It took
less than a couple minutes to mount the 'INFINITI' on my Hoyt Defiant.
Initial set-up of centershot and fine-tuning of the nock set were a
breeze with the Micro Drive System for vertical and horizontal adjustments.
The system requires no lockscrews thereby eliminating the worries of loosening
and re-tightening hex screws. To adjust, all you have to do is insert
the 9/64" hex wrench and turn. Inscribed markings and measurements
on the 'INFINITI' Rest make it easy to change and record adjustments.
Taking measurements from my old rests and transferring them to the 'INFINITI'
was a snap with the Micro Drive adjustments.
The launcher spring tension is adjusted by using a 3/32" allen wrench.
Unlike the Micro Drive System, you must remove a lockscrew. Once
removed the System is adjusted by pulling out on the Adjustment Wheel and
turning clockwise to decrease or counterclockwise to increase pressure.
You then push in the adjustment wheel, reinsert the lockscrew and tighten
to complete the procedure. I played with this and felt the factory
setting was sufficient enough to begin testing.
A feature that provides visual feedback when fine-tuning the 'INFINITI'
Rest is the 'Tuning Gauge'. The Gauge has three different feedback
positions indicated by a built in needle. The needle validates how
far the Launcher Arms have depressed upon arrow release. Green indicates
optimal arrow flight, that the Launchers have not been depressed more than
one-quarter inch upon arrow release. Yellow indicates a minor tuning
problem with Launchers depressing about a half-inch. Red indicates
a drastic problem with the Launchers depressing more than one half-inch.
The 'Tuning Gauge' is very helpful in steering you toward correcting flight
irregularities. Although it will not point to specific problems,
it will help on the severity of a problem, based on the needle position.
Once again the manual is very helpful in describing what may be causing
arrow performance problems. Once your bow is setup it is a good idea
to check the 'Tuning Gauge' occasionally to make sure you are always shooting
at peak performance.
My first shot from my 75 lb. Hoyt placed the tuning needle in the yellow.
With a small adjustment to the nocking point and launcher tension my trusty
Hoyt was hitting bullseyes within a dozen arrows. Needless to say
the 'INFINITI' has found a new home on my bow.
Installation and Setup - 4 out of 5
I found the 'INFINITI' easy to setup and tune. The Micro Drives
for vertical and horizontal adjustments were a breeze to use. The
'Tuning Gauge' offered guidance and all I really had to do was change my
nocking point and adjust the launcher tension. I did however find
the 'Tuning Gauge' label beginning to peel off. A piece of clear
tape was a quick fix but I feel the outdoor environment during hunting
season will cause its demise however Golden Key supplied an extra label
as well as a back-up tuning needle. I would have preferred more standardized
parts as this Rest did have four different lock screw sizes for adjustments
and installation. I'm sure the pros at GK had a sound reason for
this.
Design - 4 out of 5
Once again the Micro Drives are a great feature. The measurements
on it and the spring tension knob are a real plus when setup is complete.
Settings can be recorded for future tune-ups if a mishap occurs.
The only improvement I can suggest is to make the launcher assembly and
stop screw an enclosed housing similar to what is found on their Platinum
Premier.
Performance - 5 out of 5
Once installed and setup I found the 'INFINITI' to be the ultimate
hunting rest. Groupings using ACC 3-60 arrows were around an inch
at 20 yards. The launcher has a smooth and even action, which doesn't
hinder fletching clearance.
Price - 3 out of 5
I found the retail price of close to $100 a little on the high side
but then this Rest does have the workmanship and features few other boast.
I guess a good defense is that an archer using the 'INFINITI' can win a
lot of tournament money.
