EVALUATION: Pro Release C1 Torque-Free Loop

Pro Release, maker of high quality bow releases, has recently introduced the new C1 Torque-Free Loop.  It has been labeled the most accurate and forgiving loop you will ever shoot.  Read on to find out what I think when I put the unique C1 through its paces.  Unique, because I consider the overall product to be a loop within a loop.

To begin with bow loops have become a staple on all of my equipment over the past couple years.  When I first started using them I was a little hesitant because of a "Fat Lip" which occurred from my first attempt of tying on my own.  I have become quite comfortable as of late with putting on my own as well as a few friends.   But I always knew I wouldn't hesitate looking at a better device when it comes along. That time may have arrived with the Torque- Free.

Initial Inspection

When opening the package I carefully inspected the device and noted the following.  The C1 is comprised of a pair of block "U" shaped anodized aluminum halves (clamps) with a set of grooves within them.  The first groove is necessary to hold the bowstring firmly in place.  It is located at the "U" end and runs perpendicular to the main body.  The second, located at the other end, resembles the letter "J" (or upside down depending which half and how you look at it) with two holes below it.  This part enables a loop to be formed as a recommended 4" cut rope is threaded through the holes, laid within the "J" channel and repeated through the other half.  Two Phillips screws within the middle of the C1 connector ensure both the loop and connection on the bowstring are securely anchored.

The size of the loop can be adjusted to fit any style release as well as the archers draw length.  This can be accomplished by loosening the anchor screws and threading the correct length through the C1.   Once comfortable with the loop size trim any excess rope protruding from either side.  It isn't necessary but I recommend melting each end to further secure it.  At any time in the future if a loop becomes frayed or warn it can be replaced quickly with a 0 size Phillips head screwdriver.   With each Torque-Free Loop, Pro Release supplies 12 inches of nylon loop material.  This is more than enough material needed to be cut for the original 4 inches as well as two replacements.

Once installed and adjusted the Torque-Free gives the archer several advantages. First off the C1 centers a release directly behind the arrow.  Upon release energy stored in the string is centered behind the arrow.  This helps to ensure a clean release aiding in center shot tuning.  The nock of the arrow is secured between the "U" and not pinched when at full draw.  Therefore if you relax the bowstring you need not worry about the arrow falling off.  The C1 totally eliminates serving wear since a release never touches the bowstring.

To accommodate a variety of nock sizes the C1 comes in two sizes.  A medium size is recommended for nocks up to .196 inch in thickness or large for nocks up to .225 of an inch.

Testing

Testing was simple and was performed on a bow utilizing a TM Hunter style rest and caliper release.  A target placed at 10 yards confirmed that the C1 performed and held its own during the testing.  Each arrow was drawn and released using a variety of methods.  These ranged from a slight twist of the wrist to a full 180 degree turn.  Nocks were then checked after each shot to ensure that no damage occurred.

As prescribed it does and will eliminate arrow pinch even on short axle-to-axle bows due to its design.  Also like any loop it will balance pressure asserted on the arrow nock improving accuracy.  However the best feature of the C1 is the rotation of the loop did not seem to have any affect on the released arrow.  This benefit will significantly aid archers who rotate their wrists when shooting which causes unnecessary twist/torque on the bowstring.

Design 3.5 of 5 - The C1 Torque Free loop design definitely reduces torque as well as arrow pinch found on today's short axle-to-axle bows.  I also felt that the design is very secure and stable when attached to the bowstring.  The C1 will however shorten your draw somewhat.  The amount will be determined by the size of loop you prefer.  Archers will find this as well as the added weight of the C1 causes some loss in speed.

Ease of Use 4 of 5 - The creation of the loop and attachment is fairly quick and easy.  Replacement of the loop or moving the C1 to a backup bow is very simple.
