| What kind of hunts would you like to encounter out West? To give
you an idea of what to possibly expect -- West of the Mississippi -- you
should review a new video called "Another Year with Stick and String".
This video offers you some up close action of Whitetail, Elk, Turkey, Hog,
Bear, Buffalo and Mountain Lion with archery equipment. Yes that
is correct I said Buffalo and Mountain Lion.
"Another
Year with Sick and Sting" outlines what it would be like when you hooked
up with Matt Burrows of Stick and String Outfitters. Stick and Sting
Outfitters is just like the name states, "Archery Only". Matt is
an experienced archer with over 20 years of hunting with a bow and 12 animals
that qualify for Pope and Young including elk, pronghorn, mule deer and
whitetail.
What should you expect from this video? Well how about starting
off with a Buffalo hunt in the wilderness state of Colorado. Stick
and String Outfitters have exclusive bowhunting rights to over 75,000 acres
of historic Buffalo grounds. This hunt will truly symbolize a rough
and rugged archery hunt. I was on the edge of my seat as the archer
placed a second arrow into the animal that immediately starts a charge
towards the cameraman. You will have to witness the suspense for
yourself to know what happened next.
Experience either a hog or sheep hunt as you travel to Oklahoma.
Tag along with Matt and his hunting partner, Andrew, on a very comical
hog hunt as Andrew misses two porkers. Because of a high shot on
his first hunt, a spot and stalk, Andrew overcompensates from a treestand
on his second and shaves a few hairs off a plump boar's underside.
He more than makes up for his first two misses as he arrows a big sow hog
on his third attempt.
Next
travel to South Dakota as a few guests of Matt's try their luck on some
spring gobblers. Stick and String Outfitters offer hunts for either
Merriam or Rio Grande gobblers on thousands of acres of Prairie or Badland
areas. In the past hunters have experienced 100 percent shot opportunities
with over 90 percent success. You don't have to worry about drawing
a non-resident tag as all archery licenses are over the counter.
Then on to Nebraska with Matt for a continuation of more gobbler hunting.
Idaho is home to the largest black bear population in the lower 48 states.
Bears of many color phases, including blonde, cinnamon and chocolate, can
be stalked or baited. You will experience steep and rugged terrain
in addition to thick undergrowth from clear cutting on over 740,000 acres
of National Forest in North Central Idaho. Andrew also shows you
how to produce a thick "smudging" scent trail to entice the bears.
Grease is poured over a smoking fire made from green fir limbs. See
the results as one hunter explains how his beautiful chocolate bear came
in so quickly that they didn't have time to film the kill shot.
Elk is a big game animal that I hope to bowhunt again and Matt reminds
me of this on an exciting hunt. Tag along as Matt introduces two
greenhorn hunters on the experience of a lifetime. These two gentlemen
explain their own novice misfortunes that cost them a shot at a true world
class animal. Stick and String Outfitters have access to thousands
of acres of White River National Forest located in North Central Colorado.
Hunters can experience guided backcountry hunts from horseback or go it
there own on an unguided drop camp. Either way I am sure you will
experience a hunt of a lifetime.
The most grueling hunt is saved for last as Matt goes in search of his
first Mountain Lion. Experience the hunt first hand as a fresh track
is cut in the fresh snowfall. It takes no time for the dogs to hit
the trail and quickly leave the hunters to catch up. The video cuts
to the hunters traversing across the rocky terrain to finally catch up
to the dogs who have treed a lion. Matt produces a quick and clean
kill shot that sends the big cat tumbling from the tree. Join Matt
in his excitement as he explains to his boss on film how he is supposed
to be at work. He quickly recovers with an explanation that he hopes
he will graciously understand!
Ratings
Excitement 4.5 of 5
The video starts out and ends with two of the best hunting experiences
imaginable - a Buffalo hunt in the historic lands of Colorado as well as
Mountain Lion in the remote areas of the same state.
Quality 4 of 5
The quality of hunts shown are great but the audio at times could have
been a little bit better. Some parts were a little hard to understand
because of the low volume. I also thought it very informative on
the use of different elk calls and when and why each is used.
Price 5 0f 5
The video retails for only $8.49, which includes shipping, so you can?t
beat the price. The video can be ordered on Stick & String Outfitter?s
website at www.bowhuntingoutfitters.com or contact Matt directly at stickandstringoutfitters@att.net.
Next up is Matt's bowhunting video, "Africa With Stick & String,"
which will be out this fall. Dave Holt, Technical Editor for Bowhunter
Magazine, and Matt bowhunt African plains game. Hopefully I'll get a copy
to review for you.
