EVALUATION: McPherson 38 Special

My shots were 227 fps, 228, 228, 229 & 229. That's with the bow at 49 lbs.
with a 26-inch draw! To me that was incredible! Some of my 60 lb
bows at 27" do not shoot that fast!

The MCPHERSON Rep Mark Spear asked me if I wanted to test their new ‘38 Special’™. I jumped at the chance, so he sent a 50lb, 26" draw to my house. I decided to put it through the rigors of my usual finger shooting technique and installed a Golden Key Funnel, Shoot Through Arrow Rest and a Golden Key Tranquilizer Stabilizer and shot it with a Saunders Tab. The arrows were Beman 500’s cut at 27". I set this bow at 49 lbs and installed the Radar Chronograph to my front stabilizer hole.

At the range up stairs in the archery shop I shot a few arrows to get warmed up then hit the button on the chrony.  My first shot was 227 fps, the 2nd was 228, then 228,  229 and  229. Now remember, 49 lbs with a 26-inch draw! To me that was incredible! Some of my 60 lb bows at 27" do not shoot that fast!

When I shoot a bow for testing, I closed my eyes. I make sure the right pin is on the target then close my eyes to feel any vibrations or hear any noise. There were no vibrations and only a slight, audible string noise.  String Silencers will cure that. But neither the peep nor sight caused any sound or vibrations.  This was a super quiet bow! The ‘38 Special’ just stayed in my hand, well balanced and vibration free.

The limbs are a new Aluminum Z Cam with a module system that allows the bow to be adjusted from 25-32". This Z Cam delivers also delivers performance without the recoil usually associated with high performance bows. It has what Mcpherson calls the PHD System™, Perfect Horizontal Delivery which virtually levels nock travel.

The Z Cams run on a wide track Accutrac idler wheel and spin on frictionless ball bearings. The idler wheel is unique also. Where the string goes through instead of narrow slots it is wide at the top and the string goes in a wide groove. This way the string cannot jump out of the track as easy and there is less friction on the string in the grooves.

The 14 1/2" limbs are installed at  30-degrees on the 23 1/2" riser. This angle is optimum for consistent and accurate shooting. The total length of the bow, Axle to Axle is 38”.  Long enough for release or finger shooting with a generous 3/4-inch center shot.

What is unique about this bow is the VIB-X™ system. . It incorporates a patented Pearson VIB-X made of Vibrasob by Vibracheck. This polymer gel is located  in a chamber that is directly under the grip. Tests by the Alabama Collge of Engineering showed that this system reduces noise and vibration levels of  more then 40% of these levels.

The finish is a time proven Superflauge camo on the riser while the limbs sport graphics with yellow ‘Mcpherson ‘38 Special’. With Fall Foliage this will blend in with the surroundings or stand out nicely on the 3D range. You can also get this bow in ALL American camo, red, white and blue or Fade Blue. The price tag also is a modest $599.99. A great price for a fast, quiet, nice shooting bow like this one. It also comes with a Lifetime Guarantee. Pearson/McPherson advertises this as ‘The Bow to Hunt’™. I would agree.

The bow is fast, quiet and a hunters dream! I would opt for the graphics on the limbs to be a bit smaller, but this bow is still a sure winner at the range and the woods.
