Whether
climbing into a treestand in the predawn darkness or exiting after an evening
hunt can sometimes be an adventure. That first step into or out of
a treestand is most critical and accounts for most treestand accidents.
Tree limbs are not always as safe as they seem, especially with a wet boot.
Rough bark from a mature tree may seem like a sure grip but believe me
from first hand experience its not. I hung a stand and in haste my
ladder was a bit on the short end. Climbing into the stand on an
early morning hunt I tried to be Spiderman while gripping the rough bark
and almost ended up on my back.
This year Crandford Manufacturing introduces two new items that can
enhance this crucial step, the U-Grip and Glo-Caps.
The U-Grip is a screw in handle that can aid in stepping onto your treestand
from your ladder or screw in steps. It can also be used as a hook
for your backpack or bow. The U-Grip is an ergonomically shaped handle
that utilizes the "Best Screw in the hunting industry" for securing into
the tree. The "U" shaped handle is vinyl padded and is approximately
½" in diameter to assure a solid grip.
The testing of the U-Grip was done in three phases.
First check was to see how easy the device would penetrate and secure
into the tree. I started by firmly pressing the screw into the tree
and turning. Cranford is known for its sharp screw threads and the
U-Grip was no different. Little pressure was needed to begin and
within a few turns the U-Grip was secure. I purposely installed the
device about a foot above my height so that I could perform the second
test. Reaching up I was able to hang from the U-Grip and it had no
trouble what so ever handling my 210-pound frame for 10 seconds.
This is more than three times the adequate time needed to pull yourself
into your stand. The third test and final test consisted of tugging
on the U-Grip to see if it would loosen its grip. The sharp edges
held firmly and no movement was detected. Removal from the tree was
fairly easy and only slight pressure was needed to back it out.
The Glo-Caps on the other hand illuminate the end of tree steps in order
to not only help you locate your stand but also make it easier climbing.
I don't care how familiar your hunting area in the predawn darkness it
is easy to miss your treestand. As you approach your stand the illumination
from your flashlight will activate the Glo-Caps. Once at your tree
you can now secure your flashlight to allow both hands free for climbing.
No more fumbling with the light as you balance and try to grip the next
step. Also with the Glo-Caps illuminated you will no longer have
to worry about hitting the back of your hand as you blindly reach for the
next elevated step. The reverse is opposite as you descend from your
stand after an evening hunt. You will be able to place your boot
squarely on each step.
The Glo-Caps are manufactured from a pliable rubber that makes them
easy to install on the ends your Cranford tree steps. Note that these
are intended to only install on Cranford EZY Climb Rod Tree Steps.
Other manufacturer's steps are generally smaller and these caps are too
large. As noted in one of my earlier evaluations Cranford steps are
larger for easier install, grip and heavier weight loads. Since they
are specifically designed you will not have to worry about them falling
off. They fit snug and seem to hold up well. A package contains
12 caps, which are enough to easily cover one complete tree setup.
Quality 5 of 5
I have found all Cranford products to be made of the very best material
available. Also all products are made in the USA and most are backed
by a one-year warranty. Both products are quality made and the U-Grip
should give you many seasons of use. The Glo-Cap on the other hand
should last a couple seasons. I only say this because I leave my
stands out all season. Weather and prolonged exposure affects all
rubber products. But for the affordable price you will get your moneys
worth.
Design 5 of 5
I have found that Cranford will not bring a product to market if it
doesn't truly benefit the end user. Both the U-Grip and Glo-Caps
are great safety features that serve their intended purposes. The
U-Grip alleviates one of the true dangers in treestand hunting today.
That all-important step onto the treestand now becomes a whole lot safer.
No more playing spiderman when entering my treestand.
Before I thought all tree steps were made the same but from now on when
purchasing them I will look exclusively for the Cranford Manufacturing
Company EZY Climb brand. They can be found on the Internet under
sponsors at bowhunting.net or at www.ezyclimb.com
