| A sleek machined reflex riser, two-piece Rosewood grip, 65-70% let
off, good speed, ultra smooth draw, and long lasting carbon composite limbs.
It sounds like I'm describing one of today's top-end adult bows, but in
fact, its Stacey Archery's Tom Thumb II (T-II) youth bow!
That's right, this little guy has adult level quality and design
packed into its 30" axle-to-axle length.
The
Tom Thumb II is built on a reflex riser that is 100% CNC machined from
a solid block of 6061-T6 aluminum. The riser has a generous arrow rest
cut-away with a removable shelf guard that protects the archer from being
injured by arrows slipping off of the shelf. Also attached to the riser
is a full strength cable guard with a positive lockdown. A two-piece
Rosewood grip is standard on the T-II. The riser is drilled and tapped
to accept all AMO standard accessories. The riser is hard anodized and
available in 5 colors - blue, red, purple, green, and black or may be purchased
in Mossy Oak breakup camo.
The T-II limbs are straight in form and constructed from "Power Glass"
fiberglass blanks. Limbs may be purchased in either black or Mossy Oak
Breakup Camo. The limb pockets are also machined from a solid block of
6061-T6 aluminum. Each pocket is mounted with rocker studs, which ensure
a 3-point alignment. Pockets can be purchased in black or gold.
Eccentrics on the T-II are versatile, 100% machined from 6061-T6 aluminum
and ride on titanium axle pins. Two styles are available, energy wheels
or baby speed cams, in 65 or 70% let off options. Three energy wheels,
each with a 5" range of adjustment, can be selected to match the shooter.
The ranges available are: 15-20"; 18-22"; or 21-26". The baby speed cams
have a 21-25" draw length range provided through the use of draw modules.
The wheels can be purchased in either black or gold.
Testing
My son, Michael, and I tested the T-II together. Mike is six years
old and an enthusiastic evaluator! The bow wasn't here 30 minutes before
we had it out on the range firing arrows through it. We chose 24" Game
Tracker Thunder Express arrows, string finger protectors, a TM Hunter style
rest for the set-up. We looked the bow over when it first arrived and found
the quality to be unbelievable for a kids bow! It was immaculate in every
aspect and manufactured with the same quality as a scaled down version
of a top-of-the-line adult bow.
After
Mike got some shooting out of his system we decided to paper tune the T-II.
We never achieved perfect paper tears but we did get as close as the set-up
would allow (the arrows are a bit overspined for this rig).
The 1.9 pounds and short 30" axle-to-axle length made the T-II easy
for Mike to handle. Mike noted that he liked how the wood grip felt in
his hand and appreciated the 65% let off. The bow never slapped him on
the arm and had no "jump" on release. I shot the bow along with Mike and
was impressed with the smooth draw cycle. When Michael was shooting I would
watch him draw and saw no signs of a "jerky" cycle.
Mike's excitement grew when he found out we were going to use the Oehler
Chronograph to measure his bow's speed just like I do for my bow reports.
After getting set up we fired 10 shots through the chronograph. The average
speed over the 10 shots was 90 feet per second. That is zipping along for
a round wheel kid's bow set at 20 pounds and an 18" draw! Both mike and
I are happy with the T-II's speed performance.
The most important test to me was the enjoyment level my son got out
of the bow. The fact that it is a super high quality bow that looks and
acts like one of daddy's bows made him proud. When I put one of my stabilizers
on the T-II Mike almost busted at the seams. "You mean, just like yours
daddy?" he asked. When I said yes, his ears had to move out of the way
to make room for his smile! He treats it like a rare jewel and gives out
detailed instructions before he will let others use it. To say Mike enjoys
his new Tomb Thumb II is an understatement.
What do I like about the T-II? For starters, it gives me a chance to
spend more time with my son. Second, it is a top-notch tool that is introducing
my son into the great sport of archery. And third, it will grow with him,
allowing him to enjoy it for years to come and allowing me to save some
money!
