| After several years of posting evaluations on bowhunting.net, I am
sure all of you know how much of a whitetail fanatic I am. Believe
me, my wife surely knows!
I go to great expense to stay as scent free as possible when I travel
to the woods. This includes routines like showering before every
hunt and drying using towels that have been washed in scent eliminating
soaps.
I
even go as far as running the washing machine through a full cycle with
nothing but scent eliminating soap as to get rid of name brand soap residue.
Then I carefully wash my hunting clothes. After washing I never even
think of using the dryer. With the scented sheets my wife uses to
cut down on static and make clothes smell good it would be the ultimate
hunting sin to dry my clothes there.
Instead they are carefully taken out to my secret clothesline in the
woods for the ultimate outdoor drying experience. When I get ready
to hunt they are carefully placed in a marine bag where the top is double
folded and secured to form an air tight, waterproof seal. Upon arriving
at my hunting site the vigil continues as I gel up with scent eliminating
lotion and then dress. For final measure I then douse myself with
scent eliminating spray, before I begin my journey to the treestand.
After all these extreme measures I put on what I consider to be the
most effective part of my scent eliminating routine. That is putting
on my Scent-Lok liner underneath my hunting clothes. I first started
using one five years ago and since have scored five straight years on mature
whitetail bucks. One dressed out at 260 lbs. while three others have
qualified for P&Y, the largest scoring just under 150 that was shot
at a little over 30 yards ... downwind!
This
year is no different, as I have been utilizing the new Scent-Lok Climaflex
Liner. My goal is to surpass my largest bow killed buck so far and
take a mature 150 plus class buck. I have had opportunities at several
P&Y bucks this year so far, one a great 140 class eight point with
over 12 inch G2's, but have held off hoping to fulfill my goal. I
have come close with a 160 class 10 point passing downwind just out of
bowrange. I even lured him closer with a doe bleat, but upon inspecting
my area and with no sign of a hot doe present he continued on his way.
I consider the hunt to be a success. A success because I credit the
Scent-Lok for not alerting that deer of my presence so I may hunt him again
in that area and also providing me with an exciting memory.
The new Scent-Lok Climaflex Liner is amazingly 30 percent lighter than
my older liner. What is astonishing is that it is more effective
with added benefits. The lighter material improves flexibility as
well as breathability. This actually increases scent elimination
because the lighter and thinner material allows more heat and moisture
vapor to pass through trapping scent molecules. It also helps keep
you dryer by drawing perspiration away from your skin. Dryer also
means warmer when the mercury begins to dip.
You would think that because of a lighter material it would lose some
of its effectiveness. Not true because ALS Enterprises, the maker
of Scent-Lok, utilizes a new process that fuses granulated carbon between
the two layers of material. The new fusing keeps the carbon intact
thereby eliminating loss due to everyday wear and tear as well as dryer
cycles.
And to imagine that all of this is made possible because of a coconut.
Who in there wildest dreams would have ever thought that! I
learned that the best possible carbon for scent absorbtion is derived from
the shell of a coconut. Adsorption is the process of capturing scent
molecules through the many pores and crevices found in the activated carbon.
So the more surface area of carbon available the higher the level of adsorption.
Coconut shell carbon was utilized because it has the largest internal surface
area of any carbon found on earth.
Now these particles that are trapped remain with the garment until released
or "reactivated". This takes place by applying heat found in the
normal cycle of a household dryer. So about once every two weeks
I throw the entire liner in the dryer for a 30-minute cycle on medium-high.
The liner is now ready for another couple weeks of hard hunting.
And because Scent-Lok uses the fused process and the activated carbon from
a coconut I do not have to worry about blackening the inside of the dryer.
This tends to make my wife very happy!!
Why choose a liner when Scent-Lok manufactures a wide variety of
camouflaged products? Well it personally allows me a lot of versatility
depending upon the terrain, weather and style of hunting I will be doing.
I like the fact that with one liner outfit I can quickly change my camo
type and clothing style but still be assured that the odor control from
Scent-Lok will be with me.
Design 5 out of 5
The Scent-Lok liner is designed for the ultimate in outdoor hunting
comfort. The jacket features a zip up front with elastic knit cuffs.
The pants feature a comfortable elastic waist and elastic pant cuffs.
Both the jacket and pants are cut to allow total maneuverability as to
not cut and bind. A new hood design with a larger face opening that
utilizes a draw cord allowing the opening to be full face or drawn just
enough for the eyes. The lightweight design is breathable yet just
as effective due to the new fused material.
Durability 4.5 out of 5
From the beginning of season until now the Scent-Lok liner has been
with me on every outing. I usually do put on my hunting jacket until
I get to my stand; therefore more often it is just the jacket liner.
It has been through its share of brushes with heavy cover and has come
out with flying colors. The pants show no signs of wear also, especially
in the knee areas where they are constantly worked between my knees and
outer pants.
If you are looking for the originator and true integrator of scent free
clothes and liners I highly recommend Scent-Lok.
