'Trap Door' Arrow Rest

Drop away arrow rests have made major strives since their infancy only a few years ago.  These arrow rest's major advantages are not to interfere with the arrow, especially the fletching, upon release. Most designs on the market use a string, cables or mechanical bracket attached to the bow's cables or cable slide to work.  Strings and cables can break or interfere just as additional parts tend to augment repairs.

Montana Black Gold has come up with an arrow rest, called the TRAP DOOR, which utilizes inertia to activate the drop away rest thereby eliminating the need for additional brackets or cables.

As most of us know, accuracy in archery can be attributed to many factors.  Grip, anchor point and manor of release are very important, but never overlook how the arrow starts its journey.  The average length of arrow with field point or broadhead is approximately 29 inches.  Of the entire arrow length less than 3/16ths of an inch is all that physically comes into contact with the bow.  An eighth at the nock and a sixteenth or less at the arrow rest.  These two elements become crucial upon release of the arrow.  Shrink the factors that can attribute to arrow deflection and accuracy will increase. The TRAP DOOR has made a major impact of reducing arrow deflection, which virtually eliminates tuning problems.

How the TRAP DOOR works

Each time before an arrow is nocked the TRAP DOOR launchers must first be set into place.  Simply place one finger below the launcher assembly and push upward until it locks into place.

Now nock an arrow and come to full draw.  The feel and draw is similar to any prong type release on the market today.

Left: at full draw. Right: upon release.

But upon release the TRAP DOOR immediately drops out of the way of the arrow's flight.  This is caused by Inertia, which initiates the mechanics in the TRAP DOOR.     It happens so quickly that minimal arrow shaft actually comes in contact with the rest's launcher arms.  As discussed earlier, fletching contact and tuning problems are virtually eliminated, resulting in increased accuracy.

The TRAP DOOR has a sensitivity adjustment, which controls the internal components.  For example if a very lightweight carbon arrow is used the adjustment will need to be corrected for more sensitivity.  Just the opposite would be true for a heavier aluminum arrow, which may support a heavy broadhead or field point.  No matter what you shoot the TRAP DOOR can be adjusted to accommodate the arrow or draw weight.

The TRAP DOOR is designed to work with bows with as little as 30 pounds of pull and has been tested with bows as high as 100.  This weight range ensures archers can pursue any big game species throughout North America and the world for that matter.

Engineering 4 of 5

From early inspection I can verify that the TRAP DOOR is made from several quality components.  The main body is machined from a solid piece of 6061 T6 aluminum ensuring long life and full protection for the internal components.  Speaking of internal components, they are made from hardened steel to also give years of solid shooting.  Couple this with a graduated stainless steel shaft that supports very quiet Teflon covered launchers and you have a quality state of the art arrow rest.

I really like the fact the TRAP DOOR utilizes no additional parts to operate.  The more parts the more that can go wrong.  The sensitivity aspect of the rest is a plus but just make sure you have it set correctly.  I noticed that if you have it set too lightly and bring the bow to your side with a nocked arrow the rest will activate.

Warranty 5 of 5

With all the quality components no wonder the TRAP DOOR is covered by a lifetime warranty.  If it fails simply return to Montana Black Gold for free repairs or replacement.
