Rocky Mountain Warhead by Dave Conrad

'Lethal Accuracy' is how Barrie Archery describes its new expandable broadhead, the WARHEAD.  Mortal, fatal and deadly can also be synonymous with this innovative broadhead.  Barrie Archery is known for inventive new broadhead designs as well as improving existing ones.  The Warhead is no different.

This new design incorporates a 'Slide-On' Cartridge for replacement blades. When blades are dull, remove the broadhead from the arrow, slide off the old cartridge and slide on the new.  The new cartridge is self-centering on the ferrule so no realigning of the broadhead is necessary.  Replacement cartridges shot exactly like the blades they replaced so you don't have to worry about sighting in if you have to replace the cartridge in the field.  This feature receives the highest marks of any mechanical on the market. No small screws to fumble with or lose when changing blades.  Also no worries of bringing along the smallest of screwdrivers in order to replace the blades. It is just that simple, allowing field replacement to be finished in under a minute.

The WARHEAD comes in a 100 grain 3 blade configuration that features the cut on impact Tri-Cut tip.  The tip, coupled with blade alignment and step up ferrule, is designed to direct hide, bone and flesh out and away from the ferrule thereby reducing friction and increasing penetration.  The surgically sharpened blades are made of stainless steel with a thickness of .030", making them one of the thickest in the industry.  The ends of the blades form a sharp point and are held in the closed position by a rubber band. I like these two important features.  The sharp points do not cause arrow kick on sharp angled shots and the rubber band expends less energy when the blades expand.  With the blades closed the WARHEAD is a compact 5/8" to enable field point accuracy from today's fastest hunting setups.  Upon impact the deadly head expands to a cutting diameter of 1 3/8".  Not the largest but I feel this is more than adequate for a clean, quick kill on any North American big game.

Tests were conducted at 20 yards utilizing a Hummungo broadhead target with carpet behind and a 2000 model Hoyt Defiant set at 70 pounds.  Arrows consisted of Easton ACC 360's at 28.75" which weighed in at a total of 420 grains. Three other broadheads, two mechanical and a fixed blade, were also shot to compare to the WARHEAD.  The results were dependent upon penetration, accuracy and weight.  The WARHEAD had good penetration and was really only slightly outperformed by the fixed blade broadhead.  The WARHEAD not only continuously penetrated the target but went through the carpet backstop as well.  This kind of penetration, I felt, legitimized the WARHEAD  for use on any North American big game animal.  Through all the test shots I only had one blade break. This was on the fourth shot and the cartridge was quickly replaced and no damage in further testing was noted.

Accuracy was excellent as the WARHEAD hit the target as though I had shot a field point.  No alarming noises were recorded in flight.  I say this because the other mechanical broadheads generated a noticeable whistle during flight.  With the compact 5/8" in flight closure, you should not have any problems shooting this broadhead out of any  well-tuned bow.  The weight of the WARHEAD was within specification at 99 grains.

Conclusions

Design 5 of 5
I was really intrigued by the design of the replacement cartridge.  Under a minute replacement in the field is fast and no re-tuning of the broadhead was needed during tests.

Toughness 4 of 5
One blade did break during testing but this was on the fourth shot.  Blade thickness is a tough 0.30".  The Tri-Cut head is a plus and is designed to smash through bone.

Accuracy 5 of 5
No complaints here.  The WARHEAD shot as though it was a field point.

Sharpness 4 of 5
The WARHEAD should have no problems slicing through the toughest hides, be it deer, elk or wild boar.

All aspects being considered, I found the WARHEAD to one of, if not the best, of the expandable broadheads. The WARHEAD passed every test and I have no problems using this head in pursuit of whitetails.  The engineers at Barrie Archery have come up with another outstanding broadhead.
