The Hind Sight
Add-On Rear Mounted Sight
by Jon E. Silks
A replacement for the traditional
peep sight, the new rear mounted sighting system by Hind Sight Inc will
save the average archer/hunter a host of headaches!!
I have been looking (for a bunch of years) for a way to eliminate my
peep sight without losing the accuracy that comes with it and I finally
found it - The Hind Sight. I took my first deer of the year, a doe, using
my new Hind Sight. The first time I drew on the deer the sight saved me
from some serious bow torque - I let down and waited for the next opportunity.
This time I concentrated on form, lined everything up, and the rest is
history!
The basic Hind Sight that was sent to me consisted of a mounting
bracket, black plastic sight ring mounted to a threaded stud, and two brass
thumb tightened nuts used to adjust the sight ring. The mounting bracket,
made of anodized aircraft grade aluminum, allows the scope to be moved
front to back and up and down. The large aperture sight ring contains open
center cross hairs that are coated with NightLight 20, a phosphorus material.
NightLight 20 glows for up to 20 hours in total darkness and is 10 times
brighter than standard glow in the dark materials.
Following is a list of benefits noted by the manufacturer:
-
Can be used with existing front sight
-
Prevents bow torque/anchor problems
-
Maximum low light performance
-
Built in range finder
-
Increased arrow speed
-
Right or left hand reversible
-
Accurate
-
Easy to use
-
Inexpensive
To determine if these claims were accurate I put the Hind Sight to the
test one point at a time.
-
The Hind Sight worked well with my existing Archer's Choice sight. I experienced
no problems with the two lining up or with visibility as far as compatibility
is concerned.
-
As mentioned above I was saved from a possible poor shot on a doe when
the Hind Sight and my front sight did not line up. You cannot anchor wrong
or torque your bow without the Hind Sight warning you.
-
I tested the low light performance from sunset until almost complete darkness.
I found the low light performance to be superior to any peep sight that
I have ever used. This can be attributed to the large sight ring aperture,
the glow in the dark crosshairs and the distance of the rear sighting reference
from my eye.
-
Using the Hind Sight as a range finder takes a fair amount of practice
and is somewhat of a risk. I placed two different sizes of McKenzie 3D
targets at varying yards to test the range finding qualities. I found that
it is beneficial as a general guide as long as you are fairly certain of
the size of your target.
-
Replacing my peepsight with the Hind Sight afforded me a gain of two feet
per second in arrow speed.
-
The simple design does allow the sight to be reversed for right or left
hand shooters.
-
I was able to hold consistent groups at 20, 30 and 40 yards confirming
the accuracy capabilities of the Hind Sight.
-
I had the Hind Sight completely set up within 10 minutes. That includes
adjusting my pins for the thickness of the mounting plate. The simple design
makes it user friendly.
-
At only $24.95 the Hind Sight is definitely inexpensive, especially if
you compare it to some of the alternatives!
Only one characteristic was found that detracted somewhat from the sight's
effectiveness. Depending on the size of your sight pin, you could have
problems with too large of an area being covered by the cross hairs and
sight pin to be precise in your shot placement. I found myself moving the
sight off of my McKenzie targets and then back on again to be sure of my
shot.
All in all, the Hind Sight is definitely a viable alternative to traditional
peep sights. For someone who is tired of their peep sight tubing breaking,
making a buzzing noise or turning on you at the most inopportune time then
you really ought to try the Hind Sight.
Design: 4 of 5
Some of the best designs in the world are the ones that meet the requirements
of a particular job through the simplest of means. The Hind Sight does
the job well and is simple in its design. Possible improvements: Reduce
the size of the cross hairs to avoid precise shot placement difficulties
or change to a different method of reference. Offer a sight that has a
more precise adjustment of the Sight Ring.
Affordability: 5 of 5
You aren't going to find anything better that has a price even close
to the $24.95 you will have to pay for the Hind Sight!
