Scouting
September Bucks
When
September arrives many whitetail hunters begin to get excited about the
approaching deer season and venture into the field to scout for bucks.
In most locations bucks will still be in a summer feeding pattern and traveling
in bachelor groups. As a result, bucks are often very visible during this
time of year. While early September bucks seem to be tolerable of human
activity don’t be fooled into thinking you can close the distance on mature
bucks without spooking them and altering their behavior.
While
I encourage people to get out and scout the fields for deer, the smart
hunter is only there to learn what he or she can about their summer patterns
while not disturbing the deer. If a mature buck feels pressure, even this
early in the year, they can and most likely will change their daily routine.
I
suggest that you find a vantage point that keeps the wind in your favor
and glass them from a distance. Never get overzealous and try to close
the distance in order to video or take pictures!! With a little luck, that
mature buck will continue to spend the cool fall days in the same location
that he spent those hot summer nights.
Thanks
