If
trophy bucks are what you're after, be advised that when, where and how
you scout can be crucial to your success. It is important to remember that
scent control is as important during the scouting phase of the hunt as
it is during the actual hunting season. Human scent will always alarm a
big mature buck.
Some
hunters will limit their scouting to the use of binoculars while observing
deer from distant ridges. I use this method too but occasionally find the
need to walk the trails leading to and from field edges to locate bedding
areas.
I
like to use the same tactics for controlling my human scent during my in-field
scouting trips that I would use to prepare for an actual hunt. The check
list is pretty simple:
-
Shower
with scent free soap and shampoo
-
Wear
lightweight clothing that contains some form of scent control or elimination
technology
-
Wear
knee high rubber boots or wear an over the boot product designed to reduce
your human scent trail like Elimatrax
-
Spray
your entire body with a scent elimination spray
Paying
strict attention to human scent control during your pre-season scouting
trips might allow you to get into a mature bucks bedroom and gather the
information you need to improve your hunting success without spooking the
buck of your lifetime.
Thanks
for the tip Jimmy.
