FEBRUARY 2005
Safari
Club International Annual Hunter's Convention: A CLASS ACT
RENO, NEVADA - General Norman Schwarzkopf, Col. Oliver
North, actor Tom Selleck, former Vice President Dan Quale, Gary Bogner,
outdoor writers Craig Boddington & Jim Shockey, my friends at Mathews
Archery, Pacwest Communication's Jerod Broadfoot and Paul Phillips,
and my California pal Sean Duffy from the Weatherby Foundation are just
a few of the people I saw at the recent Safari Club International Annual
Hunter's Convention in Reno, Nevada.
I also saw bowhunter Jim Dougherty, Dr. Jack Frost, and Tom Hoffman
in the archery area of the show. Michelle Crummer from Muzzy
was also there with her new husband and baby, but I didn't get to visit
with them. (Bogner, Frost and Hoffman are three of the now seven men that
have harvested the North American Super Slam with a bow.)
SCI's Vicki Cheek, Matt Hubbard and the rest of the SCI staff put on
a first class event and I appreciate the help of Dr. Ray Haverland for
throwing targets for me. They made me feel very welcome
at this event. When you are on the road that helps a great deal to
have friendly folks to deal with!
This is a who's who of the hunting world and people come to this event
from around the globe. The exhibitors display everything you could
dream of for hunting and the guides and outfitters are top notch.
Two words sum up this event, first class.
I was at the event to provide some bow & arrow razzle dazzle.
Ray and I did four shows in the archery pavilion of the show floor.
Famous exhibition shooter Bob Markworth attended one of the shows and it
was great to meet him for the first time. I hit the baby aspirin
the 3rd shot the time he was in the audience. I always
perform better under a little pressure.
Sean Duffy introduced me to Col. Oliver North and I enjoyed hearing
about his bowhunting adventures. I was impressed at Col. North's
speech at Wednesday night's dinner, he is a true patriot and a good man.
It is great to learn that he has bowhunted.
I met General Schwarzkopf on the show floor and was later at a private
event where we were able to talk and joke. He is a true hero and
a gentleman, and a very likable fella. It's good to see men
like the General, actor Tom Selleck and Col. North at a hunting event.
Special thanks to Jerod Broadfoot and Paul Phillips at Pacwest Communications
for the dinner tickets and all those at their table for the good company.
Sean Duffy and his table provided great company during the first
night's dinner.
I'll have some photos from the SCI event on the website very soon.
On a scale of 1-10 the SCI Convention is an 11! I'd like to see the
Archery Pavilion packed with archery companies next year. This is
a great show to introduce non bowhunters from around the world to our sport!

THANKS TO VICKI AND MATTHEW!
The Show must go on...
even without my bows!
I flew straight from Reno and the SCI Convention to Eau Claire, WI to
do shows for one of Hugh Price's Deer Classics. I landed
around 4:45PM and was scheduled to be on stage at 8PM. All
of my luggage arrived ... except for my bow case containing both bows,
my tools, and my arrows.
The airlines told me that there were three more flights coming in that
evening so I went on to the show, minus my bows. I set the
net and my targets up and found Rob Evans at the Renegade Archery booth
who volunteered to throw targets for me. We were set up and ready
for the 8PM show -- minus a bow and arrow!
When the airport staff called at 6PM to tell me my bows didn't arrive
and that the next flight wasn't due in till 8PM I knew I better act fast.
I walked the show floor and found one recurve bow in the whole place.
It was about 50 years old, a 40#, well used Ben Pearson with a home made
feather rest. I asked the gentleman at the booth about arrows
and he dug around under the table and found three plastic vaned, heavy
carbon arrows. (Beggars can't be picky)
The show started on time at 8PM and I did the entire show as normal
shooting behind my back using the borrowed bow. The 13th arrow
hit the baby aspirin! Rob and I had just done a complete show
using a bow I'd never seen before. The odd thing was that the nock
point wasn't even secure and kept sliding up & down the string during
each shot. I didn't have any tools to fix it so I did all the shots
with a nock that slide up & down each shot. I imagine we could've
hit that baby aspirin within 5 shots if I'd had tools to clamp the nock
down.
The next day my equipment arrived. I was pretty happy to see my bows
and we ended up hitting a baby aspirin the first shot that day! Rob
Evans claims I jumped out of my shoes! The baby aspirin went into
orange dust and a few large chunks of orange pill were all that remained.
The next day Jeff Brunn tossed targets for me and we did a 3rd shot show!
They say the show must go on and indeed it did.
It was good to see Bill "Bear Crazy" Wiesner and his wife Sandy,
their buddy Dave, and outdoor writer Steve Bartylla at this event.
Special thanks to the folks that let me borrow the bow and to my throwers---Rob
Evans and Jeff Brunn! This was the first -first shot show on the
baby aspirin of the 2005 season. Thanks to Hugh Price for booking
us.
BEAR CRAZY VIDEO
Bill Wiesner is crazy over bear hunting. So much so that he's
earned the name "Bear Crazy" in the archery industry. He's currently
President of Renegade Archery and hunting buddies with Ted Nugent.
His wife Sandy shares his passion for hunting and also makes several appearances
in the video. By the way, Ted does appear on the video and
there is also a special hunt with Bill using a left handed Bear recurve
once used by Fred Bear himself.
