Deer Season Opener ... and More!

Art Champoux Some one once said variety is the spice of life. That is also true of bowhunting. Try different things.

Here in New Hampshire archery deer opened 9/15/01. On Sunday I went in to the local checking station to see how many were shot the first day. Nine were killed. The largest one field dressed at 200 lbs and had a  8 point rack. The buck was killed by a retractable head but had to be tracked   quite a ways.

The weather was warm and I was inside selling, what else ... bows and arrows! Several does were killed as well as small bucks. N.H. Deer have been forced into small areas by urban sprawl into the area. The area here is hard to hunt because what was once good deer territory has become housing developments. Most lands are posted and the spots I used to hunt are now someone's garage.

This week I plan to goose hunt with my bow and over the weekend try deer hunting. October brings small game and I will be out there flinging arrows. Some one once said variety is the spice of life. That is also true of bowhunting.

Try different things. Certainly deer is the focus, but squirrel stew is nice, pheasants are tasty too. I've always had a fondness for rabbit stew. GEESE what? Goose breast is tasty when fried in butter and do not leave out turkey. Here in N.H. You can take a turkey with your bow in the fall.  Thanksgiving is not far away.  So let us give thanks for this country, this privilege and for the people that gave us this heritage. It needs people like you and I to keep it going and fight for our right. What ever your preference may all your arrows shoot straight, may your misses be few and may we keep our heritage going into the 22 century. Chuck Saunders once said that it is up to YOU, ME, US .... he was right.

So as our country goes to fight those who oppose us thank God we truly live in a land that is free and it takes all of us to keep it that way.   Stand with me, not shorter then me, not taller then me but with me for preserving our country, what we believe in and what we hold dear to us. For me liberty is not given it is earned.  Earn it with self respect, respect for our land, our principles, our way of life and our devotion to the causes that keeps our land great. May
your season be enjoyable whether you get game or not and respect the game you hunt and the land you are hunting on.  But more then that preserve this land for future generations to hunt on it also.

That's the way I see it in my "View From Behind The String".
