It
was July 17th, the annoying alarm clock once again awoke me. Today we would
make our way to the 2004 Iowa State Sanctioned calling contest. The contest
consisted of 6 different divisions including Hunter, Owl Hooting, Friction,
Open, Masters, and Extreme Division.
I had entered the Friction, Open, and Extreme Divisions (You have to
be a resident of Iowa to enter the Masters) The event was held at Ozzie's
Outdoors, hosted by Upper Iowa Fantails. The drive from Wisconsin to Iowa
was only about 3 hours.
I knew that many great callers would be competing. I made some calls
with the Bad Buzzard Glass/Slate friction call to make sure everything
was ready. Sure enough the Bad Buzzard Calls were ever so sweet sounding.
The event started at 10:00 a.m. the jakes (12 and under) began first,
followed by the Extreme, which was one of the divisions I entered.
Caller
#4 give us your best rendition of the Plain Yelp of the hen, followed by
the Purr, and Cutting Of Excited hen, the anouncer said.
After presenting the calls I knew I did great but should
have done a little better (Since in 2003 I took 1st place championship
in my Division). The Friction division was great, I picked #1, and #9 (If
you happen to pick #1You must pick another number to call again, #1 will
not count great because you don't have to worry about score on the first
round).
The sounds that the Bad Buzzard Slate/Glass Friction call produces is
very realistic, they are soft easy to use calls that anyone can master,
weather you're an expert or beginner wild turkey hunter.
The Open class consisted the Plain Yelp of the Hen, Fly Down Cackle,
Purr, KeeKee Run, and Callers best call. I presented the KeeKee Run
on the Slate call and took a higher score than some callers did using
the mouth call.
The calling contest was about 3 hours long, and after all was said and
done they called out the final standings for: Friction, Jakes, Open, Owl
Hooting, Masters, and Extreme Divisions.
As said earlier, in 2003 I placed 1st place in my Division, and 2nd
in 2004. (I will be ready for 2005.) It must still pay off, since
this past spring Wisconsin turkey season I took two mature tom turkeys
down, I will be after turkeys, Geese and other feathered critters
come this fall.
Interested in checking out the types of turkey calls I use during calling
competitions and hunting? Then check out Bad Buzzard Turkey Calls, the
most realistic calls I have ever used, both Glass/Slate Friction type calls
are now available. Email me for ordering information or check out the website
