Michels, a native of Willmar,
MN, who now resides in Wanamingo, has spent ten years researching how meteorological
conditions and lunar factors affect the daily, monthly and seasonal activities
of
white-tailed deer.
"There is a lot of misinformation
about how the weather and the moon
affect deer." says Michels.
"One misconception is that peak breeding of deer is affected by the moon.
Scientific research shows there is no correlation between peak breeding
of whitetails and any moon phase. However, my studies have shown that deer
are greatly affected by the current weather conditions.
If it is too hot, too cold,
too wet or too windy, the deer aren't going to do what they would normally
do. Knowing how the weather affects deer will help hunters understand when
and where to find the animals under most conditions.
In an effort to help hunters
understand elk behavior, Michels spent the fall of 2001 to 2003 researching
the daily, breeding, and bugling activity of the 700+ Hoehne elk herd near
Oronoco, MN.
"Having the ability to study
an elk herd of this size, and learn how they act on a daily basis to the
weather and the different phases of the elk
breeding season was a dream
come true. I've always wanted to research elk, but living in Minnesota
made it difficult; until the Hoehne brothers allowed me to spend up to
ten hours a day with the elk from August through December."
Michels adds, "After
guiding for elk in the Rocky Mountains for
nine years, I knew I knew
a little bit about elk. But, after spending three years researching elk,
I now know how little I really knew. What I have learned about elk biology
and behavior will help hunters predict when and where to locate elk. What
I learned in nine years of guiding elk hunters will help other hunters
determine the best ways to hunt
elk this fall.
