May 30-31, 2003. The Lewiston, Minnesota Sportsmen’s Club,
Archery Department, will be hosting Ray Howell’s Kicking Bear One-on-One
campout and shoot. Kicking Bear One-on-One is a nationwide
mentoring program developed by renowned bow hunter Ray Howell. The program
encourages our sportsmen and women to get involved with today’s youth and
become mentors. The campout and shoots are a great way for
sportsmen and women to introduce our youth to the outdoors and the sport
of archery.
The program’s target is towards helping children outside our immediate
families, such as children from broken homes. Many of these children
helped in the past would have never had the chance to experience the outdoors,
archery, and most of all hunting, had it not been for sportsmen and women
like us. By encouraging our sportsmen and women to reach outside
their homes and become a mentor, we can really enlighten a young person
and make a difference in his/her quality of life and in the future of their
family to come, as well as make a difference in the future of our sport.
This event will take place Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon, and
will be comprised of safety instruction, shooting instruction, shooting
a 3-D course, cookouts, camping, fireside stories, videos, prizes, and
if things turn out like the previous year, a massive marshmallow fight!
There will also be some novelty shoots for the kids – shooting at apples
on strings, balloons, and much more. All adults are encouraged to
bring their own children and children from outside their home. Any
adults bringing children from outside their home will have the chance to
win major prizes such as bows, arrows, targets, etc. donated by Ray’s
sponsors. Various prizes will also be awarded to
all participants. The event will be free
to all who participate but will be
limited to the first 75+ youth who
register by May 23, 2003.
Those interested in participating in this event should contact
Rick Schell at (507) 689-2078 or Doug Johnson at (507) 452-6764 and reserve

no cost to participate. Food and archery equipment will be provided.
Breakfast and lunch will be served on Saturday and will also be provided
at no cost. The event is open to the public. Get the kids and
