| Muzzy Products Corporation is extremely proud to select Dr. Arnold
S. Leonard, M.D., PhD of Minneapolis, Minnesota as the recipient of its
2001 TALL MAN Award. Dr. Leonard is a general, thoracic and pediatric surgeon
who maintains a strong professional interest in developing cutting-edge
cancer therapies and, in addition, he is an enthusiastic bowhunter and
wing shooter.
"Muzzy already works with Dr. Leonard to promote the annual 'Hunt for
a Cure' pheasant shoot south of Minneapolis," says Michele Crummer of Muzzy
Products. Michele is the co-chair with Minnesota's Rob Evans for this event
that benefits the Arnold S. Leonard Cancer Research Fund. "We have a great
time and we raise a lot of money for research. Rob tells me this shoot
has raised between two and three million dollars in just nine years, almost
all of it from hunters and hunting companies."
Dr. Leonard is a world-recognized, homegrown American hero. Besides
being an internationally respected surgeon, he has a special interest in
children and in correcting inherited chest deformities. "How he found the
time to begin his cancer research center at the University of Minnesota
is a mystery," Rob says, "but his work using genetic engineering to bolster
the body's own immune system is absolutely 'cutting edge.'
"Most importantly, the groundbreaking work that has primarily been funded
by hunters is ready to be used now in clinical trials with human subjects.
This is quite a significant accomplishment, because it means Dr. Leonard's
work could be close to becoming part of our every-day regimen in fighting
and finding cures for cancer."
"Doc is truly one of us," Muzzy's John Musacchia says. "He's a bowhunter
and has taken several bucks and numerous does with the bow and arrow. When
it's hunting season in Minnesota, Doc often gets up early to hunt, goes
to the office later to perform surgery and, when it's all over, heads back
out for the evening hunt. If that's not commitment, I don't know what is!
"We established the Muzzy TALL MAN award to honor commitment like this.
Each year we recognize and honor an individual who Stands Tall among his
peers, a man or woman who represents the finest ideals of our sport, someone
we will be proud to call a hunting brother and someone our kids can look
up to. Doc Leonard is certainly one such individual."
